Survey Shows Portable Players Doing Major Damage To Radio

Ipod_vs_radio_1A new study by radio consultancy Jacobs Media confirms what broadcasters have feared: iPod/MP3 players are a large and growing threat.  From the 2005 to 2006 iPod/MP3 ownership has risen sharply, from 21%-35% – which translates to 67% growth year-to-year. No other media activity has shown anywhere near that type of dramatic increase according to the study and time spent listening to the radio is the big looser.

Ipodsurvey Rock radio is the biggest loosee with more than 50% active rock fans owning and using a portable player.  22% say they also download an listen to podcasts.

  1. And MP3 is still considered luxury / geeky item.
Soon it will be everywhere. Once 1GB model hits $40, it’ll be another explosion.

  2. Even if the price of a player comes down, players are still tethered to computers. As the price of computers comes down the ubuity of MP3 players will continue to take off. If they can become untethered from computers…now that would be a revolution that would take the MP3 player out of the higher income brackets and into the mainstream and lower classes. That’s one reason I think over-the-air music on cellphones could be so big. No computer necessary. Some people will have their music collections on their computers and will stick with an iPod, but others may prefer to buy OTA and forgo the computer. And people of all walks of life have a cellphone.

  3. That feature exist a while now. since the day of first WiFi PPC. for a $300-400, or advance handheld phone price, one can get a wifi equipped pocket computer. (yes with ability to download thing from the internet)
see wireless pocket PC. But those are expensive and even more geekier.

  4. Higher income bracker has no taste and doesn’t spend money on MP3. They spend money on Opera ticket, sat radio or classic CD.
What one wants is twee and college kids with extra money to spare. Music fending machine of sort. $1.75, $1, 50c a tune.
If I am the power that be. I will create such vending machine and unite an MP3 interface.
of course the idea of simple jukebox/vending machine everywhere will kill the entire music industry. Stores, statistic business, radio/TV business, the whole thing…. with one technology.
    so it’ll never happen.
Consider rington vs DIY mp3 clip. That feature has existed for years and years, but nobody is pushing (hey do it yourself smart ringtones, free, smart ringtones event for each individualized adress book item)
    yep… phonecompany/music industry kills it.
