Music Industry Miscellany

Creative_zen_1 >>> In a prediction that I think is very conservative, Jupiter Research forecasts that digital music spending in the US will reach $2.5 billion by 2012 and and that digital downloads spending will grow at a 16% compounded annually over the next five years while the smaller subscription services will grow at a 32% rate.  Interestingly Jupiter chose not to include ringtones in its estimate (press release)

Applelogo_56 >>> At yesterday's MacWorld Apple announced that iTunes has now sold more than 2 million songs (half in the last year alone), 50 million TV episodes and 1.3 million feature-length films.

>>> Please vote in our exclusive poll and let the world know which major label if any you think will most aggressively experiment with DRM free mp3;s.

Sirius_12 >>> Sirius has paid Howard Stern a $82.9 million stock bonus for hitting subscriber numbers. (press release)

>>> CES and MacWorld are happening this week and that means lots of deals to keep up with.  Be sure that you've got the latest scoop on:

  • Nettwerk's deal with INTENT for viral distribution.
  • WMG's deal with MobiTV
  • WMG's pact with Motorola
  • Apple's iPod phone which we think might be a major tipping point for digital music. Check out our commentary.
