It all starts tomorrow a the Bandwidth Music & Tech Conference in San Francisco. Hypebot will have coverage including a live interview with Sub Pop founder Jonathan Poneman on Friday by Nancy Miller of Wired Magazine. A preview:
Sub Pop: Twenty Years and counting...
The label is currently celebrating its 20th year, and we had a quick chat with Poneman about his thoughts on the state of the industry.
"I think the industry is in a wonderful place because the industry is becoming less and less a monolithic industry and more and more a champion of access for the consumer, and about artists being championed by the consumer be it thru blogs or increasing leveling retail."
When asked about the ongoing conversations about pricing models..
and pay vs. take, he had the following to say: "Owning a record label, I'm obviously an advocate of people playing for music but I also understand it is not entirely up to me. It is hard for me to conceive of there not being something resembling the industry that I grew up with but then again I am approaching fifty and my notions of what are proper may be becoming obsolete and I accept that."
And finally: "I relish the day when I can have conversations like the one I assume I am going to have (at the conference) and assume the conversation is more about music and less about technology and industry."
More @ Bandwidth this Thursday and Friday.
