MySpace Forces Mac Users To Uprade OS

Most web sites make sure that their improvements don't inconvenience their users. Apparently, MySpace doesn't subscribe to that level of customer service matters.  This exchange says it all:

Is it true I can no longer listen to music on myspace unless I have FLASH 10
installed.  fyi, for Mac users, you must have OS 10.4 installed in order to
install FLASH 10, a $100 upgrade if you’re under 10.4; should I consider
myspace no longer a valid  website to listen to new music if I cannot afford
this upgrade?
Thanks in advance,
Johnny

  1. myspace = FAIL
they keep going purely from the music on the site and userbase, otherwise it is useless. everytime you log on there you get hit by about 5 SPAM messages from the thousands upon thousands of fake porn linking profiles on Myspace. either that or completely random adds from people who have no relevance to you or from adding bots.
this is why i don’t go on there ever, it’s pointless. music has saved Myspace but even those days are numbered once the artists realise users are migrating to other spaces.

  2. But we’re talking about a 4 year old OS update here. If backwards compatibility is critical to people, they shouldn’t be using a Mac.
I suspect that Myspace figures that that one percent of home computer users using a Mac running at less than OSX 10.4 are an acceptable loss. Can’t say I blame them.

  3. I completely agree with @Steve. Sometimes you can’t let those idiosyncrasies distract you from doing what you are good at. On the other hand, it seems to me MySpace wants to be all things to all people, so it surprises me that backwards compatibility hasn’t taken a higher priority.

  4. While I agree that the percentage of Mac users still using anything earlier than 10.4 is probably extremely small, I can’t see why Myspace would openly alienate it’s users.
If it weren’t for the fact that people in this industry still consider a Myspace page a necessity, I would drop it and never look back. I’d rather spend my time on my own website and more user-friendly social sites.

  5. I really don’t think that MySpace intended to alienate anyone. They just wanted to come out with newer features on their site, and I have to say that I like MySpace’s new music player.
I’m sorry if you feel like you got singled out. But, think about this: maybe it was Adobe’s fault for not being able to run Flash 10 on older Mac Operating Systems.
