What Happens To One Click Wonders?

Yesterday, browsing through the popular feed on Digg, I came across the headline “Amazing Student Music Video Shot in One Take” and it piqued my interest.  After having viewed the video, I was blown away.  Everyone involved in the production had done a phenomenal job, the footage shot on the RED camera looked amazing, and the performance was great.

Moments later, I noticed that Andrew Goodrich of Artist House Music had posted on Facebook that he loved the music video as well.  We exchanged brief comments and something he said really stuck with me: “It's great to create something viral, but if you can't prove that you can deliver again, soon, what ultimately does the viral exposure get you?

Traditionally, if you were fortunate enough to land a one hit wonder, it opened a huge window in your career, but then it closed all the doors.  Think Nine Days “Absolutely (Story Of a Girl)” or Crazy Town “Butterfly.”  Radio pumped the song, people got tired of it, and there was nothing left as great to fill the void.  But it was great exposure and tons of people heard the song, many times over.

What happens to one click wonders?  How do they even begin to try and connect the dots?  While, like I said, I thoroughly enjoyed the artist in the video, it’s likely that for many, it was just a onetime view. However, unless they can top that performance, that’s it, which is sad, considering that the music video is highly original and the rap itself rivals many of the stuff on the radio.

Let alone, when you do visit the artist’s MySpace, the video is posted on top, but there is no place visible to enter an email address and receive updates about the next performance.  Outdated terminology or not, this is a complete and utter epic fail on behalf of the artist in the video.  With 3838 Diggs and counting this huge opportunity to gain new fans (Not MySpace Friends) that isn’t even being capitalized on properly.
What do you think happens to one click wonders?
