Introduce Yourself To The Hypebot Community

It's the day before a long holiday weekend here in the US which means it's also a day when many of us are tied to our desks but have no desire to do any work.  As a constructive solution to the workday blahs, I'm throwing a little networking party here on Hypebot.

Networking

In the comments section below, tell us a little about yourself, what you're working on and what excites you (PG-13 only).  Include links that you think might be of interest to others and I suggest adding your name and email or some way that other Hypebot readers interested in collaborating can find you. Shameless plugs are allowed.

Don't be shy. Tell us about yourself…

I’m currently writing a blog called The Indie Digest, which I have tasked with the objective to find the model for the new music industry.

  2. My name is Richard Siddall-Jones, I’m currently working for Universal Music in the in the digital delivery team.
I finished my degree in Music Technology BSc (Hons) from Birmingham City University in June this year. My dissertation was entitled “An Evaluation of Content Protection Techniques for the Music Industry in the Digital Age”, after a one year internship at EMI Music. (Hypebot provided great news which peppered my report, thanks!).
I’m interested in all sides of the industry, especially new revenue streams and the changing model of the industry. I still have a great passion for making and producing music. Twitter: richsj86

  4. Good day all.
I am a singer/songwriter as well as a blogger, podcaster and internet marketer. If you are into acoustic rock/americana you can check out the first tune I ever recorded – “How to Change the World” – over at http://planetcorey.com.
If you like all types of music you might want to check out my blog and podcast over at http://Musicgoat.com (am currently editing my annual Blues, BBQ and Beer podcast which is going up tomorrow). Basically it is a space where I don’t concentrate on one specific genre since that would be kinda boring (guest posts welcome).
What excites me? Well good music of course. Hearing it, sharing it, playing it, coming up with a infectious chorus, etc.

  5. Hey everyone,
I’m an independent rock artist from Nashville, TN. I just released my first EP, Fantasy World, in May and I’m currently scheduling shows. You can find out more about my music at http://christopherjoel.com or connect with me on twitter – @christopherjoel. I’m also currently working on a book for musicians about websites.
I get excited by passionate music. I love being in a crowd that’s getting swept away by the band on stage. Even more, I get excited when I hear a song idea for the first time and it sounds better than what was in my head!
I’ll vouch for Owen Kelly too, his blog is good stuff.

  6. My name is Brian, I’m a 23 year old musician from NJ/NYC, and I’m terrified. I’m scared that I won’t have the endurance and commitment it takes succeed as an artist, or even worse – that I DO have the focus and dedication to succeed, and I will wind up sacrificing everything else that is good in my life for my career.

  7. Hello! I’m Tiara the Merch Girl, emerging burlesque/circus/improv performer and all round creative dabbler. I’m starting a business called The Merch Girl, which provides support services to creative productions and creators – fan mail, merch selling, stage management, social media, whatever you like really!
I enjoy music (and creativity in general) and would like to know more about how I can support fellow artists. The Merch Girl was inspired by Kevin Kelly’s 1000 True Fans essay, whose concepts still get discussed a lot in blogs like these. I’m looking forward to learning more about what musicians find important in their work.

  8. Hello,
I am the songwriter in an indie band from Vancouver, BC Canada. We just released our debut album http://www.treelines.bandcamp.com to have a listen if you want.
As an independent artist I really appreciate this blog and tips it offers in navigating the confusing and increasingly saturated market of online music ‘tools’. hope all you Americans enjoy your holiday! (We just had Canada Day yesterday)

  9. My name is Aaron Morris http://www.aaronmorris.org . I’m originally from Austin, Texas. I moved to Houston, Texas 4 years ago to help start a recording studio Tierra Studios http://www.tierrastudios.com . We have since added music publishing and record label to our business.
As most people in the business these days I wear a lot of hats. My formal training is in Production and Engineering, but I also do A&R, Licensing, and many other varied tasks associated with running a modern music business.
    Love the blog!
    -Aaron

  10. Hi all!
I’m Andrew Durkin, leader of / composer for the Industrial Jazz Group, a wacky 16-piece big band based on the US west coast. Weird, fun, and quirky we are! (www.industrialjazzgroup.com)
I also write a regular blog — about the band, but also about music in general (including the music industry). It is here: uglyrug.blogspot.com
    I also “microblog” (i.e., twitter) here: http://www.twitter.com/uglyrug
Don’t be terrified, Brian. This is a great time to be a musician!
    Good luck to us all.

  11. Well That is a good idea. I am Matt Vucic. Owner/Creative Director of Even Tone Music Publishing. We work on building our catalog everyday. Music from county, rock, electroinca, to production music.
    Also, a songwriter and drummer.
I have just recently been turned onto Hypebot. Great job. It is now my go to for music industry news!

  12. greetings!
i’m chantilly, an acoustic songstress from brooklyn. it’s cool to “meet” all of you, or at least read a shortened version of your musical lives. i come here from time to time to brush up on what’s happening in the industry, and gather inspiration where i can find it.
i’m at the end stages of making my first album, that i’ve been working on forever it seems. it’s in mixingland now, with masteringland soon to follow. licensing is one goal i’m shooting for, so i’m doing my research on that. also, i’ve been trying to play as many shows as i can, wherever i can, although i’m on a bit of a break from that at the moment.
if there are any other musicians/ music-y people here in the nyc area (or anywhere really, seeing as everywhere is where i want to be), i’d love to meet up sometime! i’m always interested in finding other artists to play shows/ mingle with, etc. also, i’m in need of some string players/ percussionists/ harpists/ whatever to start accompanying me at gigs. would be fun, no?
my blog is dying a slow death, but i’ve been twittering a lot. follow me!

  13. Thanks Andrew. I’m definitely not going to dispute that! I’m definitely glad that today’s tools have created an environment where a band can be successful without any outside help. Not that help is a bad thing, it just depends who is helping and what their intentions for helping are.
Also, I think articulating exactly what I was afraid of in “public” already helps me feel better about it. Now that I’ve identified the problem I can focus on a specific solution. That and Seth Godin’s post yesterday helped provide a little boost: http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2009/07/the-riskreward-confusion.html

  14. Oliver – founder of Metablocks (Sound and Pictures @metablocks). We are a social media technology firm that builds applications and infrastructure for the music (and other) industries. In addition to custom apps we have a Widget Content Management Platform (Widgetmatic: http://www.widgetmatic.com, @widgetmatic), a Social Media Analytics Dashboard for Artists (Artistmatic: http://www.artistmatic.com, @artistmatic) and a library of Facebook applications for promoting brands, bands and businesses (SocialGrub, SuperFan, i.e.).

  15. Hi, Hypebot!
I’m Grant Himmler, recently graduated from Berklee College of Music with a business degree. I’ve been reading Hypebot for some time now, and it probably helped me get a degree. For real.
I manage a girl who goes by the name a House a Home. She recently co-wrote a bitchin song called “Now I Know” with Kyle Patrick, the lead singer of The Click Five, which can be heard and downloaded at http://ahouseahome.bandcamp.com, or at myspace, go check it out!
I’ll be moving to Austin, TX in September, because New York doesn’t agree with me and I hate the Lakers. I’m waaaay excited about that city and its potential! There’s no reason it shouldn’t emerge as a true musical force in the next decade, and I want to be there when it happens!
I’m fascinated by social media, the studio, and songwriting. I’m something of a photographer (http://www.flickr.com/eaglesinthefurnace). I’m tall.

  16. Hi all,
Name is Kenneal. Fledgling electronic musician by night and Data Analyst by day. Self-taught non-playing pianist, meaning, I can hammer out enough to make my pieces sound interesting but don’t dare ask me to play something, anything, for you. I go by the producer name of Rachmannanoff finally after numerous name changes preceding.
    I am with blog:
    http://consumeus.blogspot.com/
Mainly contains my rantings and ravings about music related stuff, etc.. Don’t get to update it as much as I would like to, but, it ain’t dead yet, so, there’s hope. It contains some free REX format drum breaks on the left along with a music player for some of my songs from my main music page at:
    http://www.reverbnation.com/juxtaposition
Try to add stuff there as I create it, for the most part.
Lastly, I’m proud to say that I’ve been up on twitter since early last year, which you can see from my updates on my twitter page at:
    http://twitter.com/Remedial
Personally, I think twitter has reached it’s apex and will begin a sharp decline shortly. I’m wondering what will replace it, but, whatever it is, I’m sure it’ll be another 1 and a half before the rest of the world catches on. I remember introducing Twitter to folks and them saying, “Why would I want people to know what I’m doing?”. Now?? It’s taken over the world, damn near.
P.S. It’s a damn shame what’s happening to myspace, but, they should have changed with the times a loooooonnnnng time ago. They gave users too much leeway to create ugly portrayals of themselves on the internet.
Either way, hit me up at any of those social networks and I’ll reply.
    Peace.

  17. Thanks for giving us some space to talk about our favorite subject…ourselves! 😉
I’m Jason Parker, a jazz trumpet player from Seattle WA. I write a blog called http://oneworkingmusician.com where I talk about the life of a working musician, how I got there, how I sustain it, and give tips and suggestions to those considering an artful career.
I’m a firm believer that if I can make a living as a musician so can you. It just takes hard work, dedication, and a willingness to do the non-musical things that most musicians don’t/won’t do.
I’ll hope you’ll check out the blog and add your two cents!
    Cheers,
    Jason

  18. And, to be sure that I’m not misunderstood, when I say ugly portrayals, I mean the horrendous, needlessly busy templates most people use.

  19. This is great stuff guys. Thanks. Be sure to include your contact info so others can reach you.
I just sent a Tweet to encourage others to participate. Please help spread the word.
    Bruce

  20. Its very cool to see the variety of Hypebot readers. I’m Brett Dawson and I have a funky rock groove based original band called Soul of the River. We’re about to release our first full length album 2 years in the making so I’m stressing on all the things I need to do to push the album and prepare for the release.
    Our twitter is http://twitter.com/souloftheriver
We have all free downloads along the Red Hot Chili Peppers/Ben Harper vein at http://www.souloftheriver.com

  21. Hi all, I’m April of Cherry Bomb Promo (website coming soon, myspace.com/cherrybombpromo for now).
I’ve been a supporter of local & indie bands for a while now and after starting my own business last year, I decided to take my skills from that and start Cherry Bomb to help these guys (and girls!) manage their online presence using social media. I figure they’re all busy with full time jobs, families, gigs, rehearsal, recording, etc. that they don’t always have time to promote themselves online so that’s where I come in. 🙂
I’m currently working with an awesome band called 3 Day Meat Sale (myspace.com/3daymeatsale) and hoping to add some more bands too!
I love working with people from all aspects of the music industry, the Internet radio DJs, the bands, the labels and venues… I just enjoy being in touch with people who share my passion for music and I love hearing about new artists.
Oh and I’m also a frustrated rock star with absolutely no musical talent whatsoever. 😉

  22. My name is Dustin Fanzo. I am a recent (Sept. 08) graduate of Music Business and Recording Arts from Full Sail University in Florida.
I am currently doing Audio Visual work for PSAV at the Boulders Resort in Scottsdale, AZ. I have been eagerly seeking a marketing position for a company in the music industry. I grew up with a background in product marketing and I have an extensive education background in the music business. I have always been told that I have a gift for marketing and “staying ahead of the curve” with music and technology and would LOVE to use that to bring a new approach to any company’s marketing campaign.
I have a passion for music and technology that is a must-have to carry a company into the new era of digital media and marketing. I love music. I love marketing. I love Twitter and social media. There is nothing else to say.
If you have any interest in hiring a recent college graduate that is ready to dedicate himself 110% to your company and product then please DO NOT HESITATE to contact me.
I live in the Phoenix area but am more than willing to relocate for the right opportunity.
Reach out and you wont be disappointed.
    Thanks,

  23. Charlie Dahan, Associate Professor in the recording industry program at Middle Tennessee State University and Agent at The Roots Agency. I have been working on a blog called Center of the Indie Label Universe about indie labels, DIY, etc. The url is below. I am also working on the Gennett Records discography, they were a label in the pre-WW2 that released the first (amongst the first) records by Louis Armstorng, Hoagy Carmichael, Jelly Roll Morton, etc. Father of two and husband of one.

  24. Kimball Packard / Sound Advice Management, I do artist management with a roster of artists mainly from New Orleans, although that is changing lately. I recently added Sheila Nicholls, who is re-emerging after a 5 year hiatus with a new CD coming out July 21st. You may remember her from the Hi Fidelity soundtrack or her CD “Wake”, produced by Glen Ballard in 2002, that cracked the top 40 with “Faith”.
My New Orleans acts include singer/songwriter Kristin Diable, who also has a new CD coming out, and currently, a national Chrysler/Jeep tv commercial for which she wrote and performed the song. Glen David Andrews is probably one of the city’s most dynamic performers, lit up the tent at Jazzfest this year, w/ Jon Pareles of the NY Times calling him his “discovery of the festival”, and the New Orleans Social Club are an all-star band w/ Ivan Neville, Henry Butler, Raymond Weber and original Meters, George Porter Jr and Leo Nocentelli.
http://www.soundadvicemanagement.com is as good a jumping off point as any for more info on the roster or me. I’m on twitter @soundadvice, facebook /kimballpackard, myspace kpsoundadvice and email is packard1@gmail.com
Nice meeting you all here. Hypebot rocks!

  25. Greetings from Brazil,
My name is Flavio and I run Scubidu Prods / Records here in Brazil. We do management and booking, promote foreign artists tours in Brazil and place Brazilian artists on stages around the world.
I’ve been reading hypebot for quite a while and it sure has helped me a lot. Our artists are all very well represented web2.0wise and we try as much as we can to tranaslate their web sucess into real $ and real-life fans. I think we’ve been succesful for a young company working with independent artists in Brazil.
    Check out the good music:

  26. Hi, My name is Jon and I play with a cello (& six string electric cello) & guitar duo called Montana Skies. The music is a mix of world/classical and rock mixing traditional sound and modern electronic effects, looping etc.. We love playing playing live and have been touring full time for about 5 years.
I love reading hypebot to stay up to date on the latest news and tools for indie artists. The bot is on top of it all…!! We have just finished a live DVD and just launched a new community based website here:

  27. My name is Myles Grosovsky. I work for Sneak Attack Media and do online marketing and promotions. I love Hypebot and read it every day during while I eat my lunch. I am very interested in any and all good music as well as trends and shifting strategies in the music industry and online social media.

  28. Hi everyone, great to get some back stories on some of the ‘faces’ I see here!
I’m a singer-songwriter-musician based near Toronto, Canada. I’ve recently released my first full length record – its called ‘Burst’. I’ve also started blogging about music and the industry (because I found I couldn’t leave long enough comments for some of the interesting topics we discuss here at Hypebot :))
You can find my website at http://www.jayscarmusic.com
The tracks from my record can all be played in the handy music player located on the sidebar! I also have profies at all the usual suspects (myspace, facebook, last.fm, thesixtyone, reverbnation)
I’m gearing up for some local shows, and can’t wait to hear these songs live!

  29. I’m Suzanne Lainson. I’ve been a full-time writer and also involved in both sports and music marketing. My networks include people in sports, music, and the tech and VC communities. Some of my writing is online, some of it is not (some projects, like eMileHigh and my women’s sports business column for Oxygen Media, aren’t archived any longer.)
An early online project of mine were newsletters for athletes, their families, and their coaches. You can find them here:
    http://www.onlinesports.com/sportstrust
I did a blog on local music scenes.
    http://localmusicbiz.blogspot.com/
Currently I am blogging for Brands Plus Music. It’s a company based in LA, but I am in Boulder CO.
    http://brandsplusmusic.blogspot.com/
I’ve been very heavily online since 1993 and have been involved in all sorts of online communities and whatever form social media has taken over the years. Much of what is considered new in social media/networking is really just an evolution of what has come before.
I’ve also been involved in music at all levels other than running a major label and doing formal radio promotion. Everything from selling merch at shows, preparing business plans, talking to investors, doing PR, booking, and so on.

  30. Hi all, I’m Joe Rodriguez from NECODO. I am here in Seattle, WA currently working on a digital platform and tools to help artist, labels, distributors sell the music direct to consumers. We are putting our finishing touches on the product and are going to be launching soon. Check out http://www.necodo.com to learn more. I am an huge fan of music and constantly am surfing this great blog and many others to hear about what is new and happening in the industry that seems to be ever changing. I can’t wait to see what is next. Well have a great 4th of July and feel free to reach out to me.
    Thanks,

  31. Hi! I’m Terry Hart, currently 2/3’s of my way through law school in not-so-sunny Chicago. My interests lie in the strenghthening nexus between music, law, and technology. Over the past year I have been assisting a local professor with research relating to emerging music business models, specifically what role recommendation networks play (and have found a lot of great information right here!)
I have also recently begun contributing to http://www.grindefx.com, a relatively new blog focusing on news, advice, and insights for independent musicians.

  32. Hi everyone!
My name is Marja Ernst. I’ve just completed my Master of Music Business certificate from Berkleemusic.
I spent the last few years working with The Ernst Family Singers (www.ernstfamily.ca), a ten member family cappella group. During this time, I booked several lengthy tours, and performed many of the management duties for the group.
I also hold the position of assistant administrator of the Halifax Summer Opera workshop, based in Halifax NS, and am currently in my second year of this job.
I recently quit my position with the singing group, and am now trying to figure out where (physical location) and how (type of job position) I want to fit into the music biz. On the lookout for interesting possibilities!
I always love meeting new and interesting people, so please contact me through any of the following options:
    Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/marjae
    Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/marjae

My name is Eileen, and I am Director of New MEdia/Marketing for Tipping Point Entertainment…I also write CD/show reviews for Atlanta Music Guide, I write a “Lessons for Rockstars: Confessions of a Music Publicist” blog, and own a photo/videography studio!
I am completely obsessed with being at the forefront of the new music business. I am so lucky to work with some music tastemakers, especially my boss PD Leslie Fram…check her out on NYC’s WRXP (1019rxp.com) She also does the morning show with the legendary Matt Pinfield….She has taught me the ropes on what it’s like to be a woman in the music industry, and I want to be able to continue to share great music to the masses through the new digital age!
    Nice to meet everyone!

  34. Hello All!
My name is John but many call me JC (there are some who call me… Tim?)and I work at ArtiSans Label.
We are a record company that allows artists to maintain complete control of their careers, copyrights and profits. We have done this by simply coordinating the services that independent musicians need, putting together comprehensive all-inclusive packages and providing upfront pricing.
We are here to supplement independent artists DIY efforts by taking a majority of the tasks off of their hands. The artist makes all of the decisions and pays for everything just like they would if they had to do it on their own, except we do all of the busy work. We file copyrights and business forms on their behalf. We vet vendors and place orders for CDs, merchandise and design services leaving artists the time and freedom to make music and play shows.
By the way, the cost of all of this is comparable to what an artist would spend on their own and we get things done much faster!

I am not working in the music business, but am just a music lover, who has gotten curious over the years, how all of this “big machine” actually works. Growing up in the 80s in a rural area of Germany where there was basically no live music, music for me isn’t about the perfect concert experience at all, but instead about great studio recordings. At 11 years of age, I had saved enough pocket money for a CD player, so I’m a member of the “interim generation” that grew up on CDs instead of LPs or files. Once I had started collecting music, the radio and the hyped stuff that other kids listened to, didn’t bother me anymore, because I was regularly looking through booklets for who played what on my CDs and when I liked that, looking for these artists own recordings in the CD store.
I was recording proper mixtapes as early as at the age of 12 and still do occasionally, but the disappearance of cassette decks has turned me towards playlists.
When we had to write that paper at school to practise scientific writing in case we would need it in the future, I wrote it in English and chose the subject of “The Blues”. Learning about society in the US in the 20s and 30s and the beginning of the music business got me interested in the subject.
Later, with the arrival of the internet, also came artist blogs and fan sites. There was an era in the early 2000s when labels, in their merger-mania, dropped many of my favourite artists, and I was among those many fans talking with these artists on their blogs and homepages into self-releasing their CDs because other artists had done so successfully before them – something which is now pretty common practise among artists.
And in 2003/04/05, I was a regular contributor to a CD anti-copyprotection watchdog website from the UK that had an extensive list of CDs to avoid. In the wake of the SonyBMG rootkit debacle, this site was no longer needed, so it disappeared. But I guess it was there where I found the link to this blog, HypeBot.
I have found the insights into the business side of things that you present on your site to be quite interesting.
But for my purposes, the physical CD has many advantages over just a bunch of files, especially when it comes to rediscovering “deep tracks” for playlists and mixtapes, discovering new artists with the help of album credits that are completely lost on virtual releases, and organising and archiving.
I don’t know why exactly I’m lurking around here, but it is interesting.

  46. Hey everyone,
I’m a loyal reader of Hypebot, so can’t resist dropping few lines here (though I’m in Kaliningrad, Russia, and can only envy your long holiday weekend).
I work as an editor-in-chief and a project manager at Ultimate-Guitar.com (currently the biggest guitar tablature website on the net). My “hobby” is DJing and being a local live events promoter, but it’s not that much important.
Hypebot is in my a-list of blogs to read everyday, keep up the great work!
    Follow me at http://twitter.com/matterandrew
    Thanks.

  47. I do believe it is possible to sell records in today’s climate, but music companies need to be constantly moving forward and embracing technology, following the trends that consumers are setting.
CDs will not flourish by pushing products under consumers noses; they will simply turn to digital or more likely illegitimate services. Instead, I believe companies should create products with great tangible value, which music fans WANT to own.
I’ll check out your music this evening Selorm, thanks for getting in touch.

  48. Hi All,
I’m Paul Austin Kelly, an ex-pat American singer living in the south of England. I made a good living singing opera in the international houses for 15 years, then realized my life was slipping by and I wasn’t enjoying what I was doing but at least I was stressed out.
Now I run a family music company called Walking Oliver which began life in 2003. We began by creating a catalog of 12 of our own CDs for kids and families and are now branching out into distribution. Beginning very shortly we will be the only family music distribution house in the UK, importing titles from performing American artists, mostly and hoping we can create a more exciting (and excited) market here in Britain. Happily, unlike with most genres, there’s still a real demand for a physical product when you’re talking about childrens’ and family music.
There’s gotta be more than one way to skin a cat. 🙂
Cheers and best wishes to all!
    Paul

  49. Hi I’m David Sherbow aka MusicBizGuy. I am the founder of a new music booking utility and MySpace app called Live Music Machine, launching sometime this month, where artists can get booked by anyone at anytime mostly anywhere on the Internet that they put our widget. My core business is urban independent radio promotion where I have broken over 100 No. 1 records over the past 15 years. I have managed and booked rock, funk, hip-hop and gospel artists and put out over 25 records and secured numerous major label record deals. I have over 1300 followers on Twitter as MusicBizGuy and blog on occasion at http://www.musicbizguy,com. I spend a lot of time in the Internet music space and think I know where the new music business is going in the digital age. Have a great holiday week end !!!

  51. Greetings from Maine! I’m Kris and I found Hypebot while interning a few years ago for Bruce’s company, Skyline Music, with Pat May. I realized today that I rarely go a day without stopping by Hypebot to see what’s going on.
I graduated from Berklee College of Music two years ago and now work for Hertz Rent-a-Car in Portland. I came back to Maine to play with my band but unfortunately there aren’t too many jobs in the music industry up here.
I sing in a semi-popular rock band up here in Portland called Highway Jackson. We’ve had some small success with radio and gotten to play some cool shows. Our stuff can be found all over the net but check out highwayjackson.net for a free download.
Other bands/musicians/songwriters: If you ever want to travel up to Portland(it’s a GREAT scene up here!) please shoot me an email. Our favorite thing to do is show swap and team up with other bands. Any sub genre of rock is fine, even folk and acoustic stuff.
If you have a music blog please post it here as others have! My google reader could always use more feeds!
    Here’s to a sunny 4th!

  52. Hello everyone, my name is Barry Ehrmann. I am a video producer from New York and California, specializing in concert productions for television and DVD. Which is exactly what my problem is. With DVD sales tanking and television not very music friendly (aside from singing and dancing shows), I need to figure out how to monetize concerts on the Internet…. Or at least create a platform for artists to show their chops.

  53. My name is Kellar, and I run Foot Records in NYC. We work with artists all over the globe, and we use the benefits of the internet and web 2.0 to do most of our marketing.

  54. Hi there. My name is Jesse Kanner. I’m a marketing technologist currently working for EMI Music. I design and build specialized tools and systems for gathering and visualizing artist data. Prior to that I worked for WMG as a new media consultant here in New York.
I was a recording engineer in Los Angeles in the early 90’s but transitioned into online media development (as so many did at that time). I rode the first dotcom boom at idealab! in Pasadena and have happily made my way back into the music business.

  55. Hey folks,
    My name is Daniel Frazer, I’m part of I Am Not Lefthanded (www.iamnotlefthanded.com) We’re a mostly Irish, currently London-based, female-fronted, american-indie-sounding three-piece.
Think Natalie Merchant fronting Death Cab and it gives you a fairly decent idea of how we sound.
I’m a big fan of Hypebot – it’s the number one filter for what’s going on in this over-crowded internet of ours.
Just a musician, struggling to get heard 🙂

  56. Hi Everyone, My name is Paul Metsa. I am a singer-songwriter from Minneapolis and have been releasing original projects on my own label (originally called Raven Records, and now at http://www.MaximumFolk.com)since 1984. I read Hypebot daily and enjoy Bruce’s and everyone else’s posts. I am always looking for new and creative ways to negotiate the digital terrain. I am also looking for licensing opportunities, and advice on the new outlets for studio releases, live shows, videos, and merchandise. If anyone would like to share their ideas with me directly, I can be reached at metsa@black-hole.com You can also find more info on me at http://www.paulmetsa.com and http://www.paulandsonny.com (my blues side project.) I wish everyone the best on his 4th of July weekend. God bless America and everywhere else as well. Peace, Paul Metsa

  57. Hey all,
My name is Shawn Daley, I’m a Sound Engineer at Euphonic Sound Recording Studio in Toronto. I also take care of Online Artist Management for our indie label Broken Window Records.
I earned my Sound Engineering degree at IAOD in Toronto, and based on my experiences, I would like to offer the some advice:
Don’t spend ten’s of thousands of dollars on a sound technology course. Find an internship opportunity in your field and work for free for a couple years. The learning experience is focused specifically on you as opposed to an entire classroom, and the only dent in your walled will be transportation fees and coffee.
I help operate an indie music advice blog called Studio Manifesto, covering topics from production, to promotion and music culture.
Great to see Hypebot organizing something like this. Hope this isn’t the last time!

  59. Hello everyone! I’ve long been a Hypebot lurker. Bruce has built this site into such an incredible resource.
I’m Barri, I work for Dropcards (www.dropcards.com). We print download cards, we build interactive promotions and we play in the intersection of the physical world and the digital sphere. I get the pleasure of working directly with a diverse cross-section of the industry from indie artists up through entertainment and digital marketing specialists at your favorite household brand. (I also specialize in convoluted custom projects and international clients, so I often practice my French on unsuspecting Quebecois and Francais.)
I never quite intended to work in music; it simply wasn’t a goal of mine. There are many other things that interest me. I think this simple truth has allowed me to keep both a healthy sense of perspective and a measure of sanity in relation to The State of The Industry, as it were.
I’m an academic at heart, a devotee of interdisciplinary work. One day, in the not-so-distant future, I’ll be a PhD candidate. Music and subcultures, specifically in relation to literature, are among my areas of study. I twice(!) aborted attempts to write a thesis on hip hop aesthetics and slam poetry.
I must return to answering e-mail here at work, but those of you out there are more than welcome to add to my inbox. That is, assuming you’re getting in contact to talk–even tangentially–about digital media. 🙂
Have a wonderful holiday, if you’re here in the States!

  60. Hi, my name is Matt Kraatz, and I am a Junior at Belmont University in Nashville. I currently write a blog called The Daily Grind (dgmetal.org), where I review new metal releases and report on industry news, especially how it relates to the local artist. I’m also coordinating a big re-branding effort to take place in the fall, with a new site, new writers and some promotional support.
I’m very interested in the recording arts, and I’ve been gathering experience independently, at school, and through an internship at the Sound Kitchen.
I’m also interested in new media distribution models, some elements of popular culture and all of the creativity abound in the music business.
    Nice to meet you all.

  62. Great idea on the networking, Bruce. I love reading the updates on the music biz and technology.
After much ruminating on how music publicity needs to change to adapt to shifts in both the music biz and the media space, we launched a brand new style of music publicity at http://www.FlipSwitchPR.com
Basically, we have automated a lot of the things that a publicity company would do (outreach, getting them music, getting them photos, getting you feedback). Unlike the traditional campaign, we have more focus on the digital era (digital downloads, no mailing costs, not so many phone calls). This allows us to offer publicity campaigns at a fraction of the cost of a more traditional publicity firm. We hit 2000 some journalists with weekly blasts about current, past, and future clients.
It is a new model of publicity well-suited to the emerging music economy, from independent labels to artists that have taken their careers into their own hands, and from physical product to digital-only releases. We all know that things are still in flux, but one thing that is for sure is that we cannot keep doing things the way we used to. I don’t want to take up more than my share of space here, so check out the website and get in touch if you want more info. I look forward to reading everyone else’s intros.

  63. First of all, I really like that line “Fear only shows because he knows he can.” I like the message of the song too, I’m turned off by a lot of new rap/hip-hop because of how materialistic and passionless it has gotten. I hung out with an old professor last night, Rod Hui, who recorded Public Enemey’s It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back and Fear Of A Black Planet. Those records are angry and powerful, they make strong political statements, they stand for something. These days not much does, but it’s awesome that you still do.
I think you’re also right about getting what you want if you can clearly define it. My long term goal is to not have a day job and be fully supported by my music. I’m open to how that happens, whether it means we hire our own management team to run the day-to-day stuff or we have a label or we continue doing everything ourselves and hiring freelancers to help with projects. The only thing I don’t want, if we do sign to a label, is a traditional deal.
We tracked the song you listened to (and our whole album) at my house. I do have a degree in production from NYU so it still sounds pretty good, but there are shortcomings from recording at home. If we had the coin, I would love to go to a real studio to track drums, because that’s the most important instrument to have a good sounding room to record in, the space really effects the sound.
From there we could go back to my place and record the rest of the instruments. That would dramatically reduce the cost of studio time, which in turn reduces the cost of our album to our label. If they’re taking less financial risk, then we should get more of the rights/percentage of sales, and I’d want to own my own masters and publishing so that we can handle licensing deals without having to negotiate with different parties to make anything happen. That’s usually what shuts those deals down, you can get rights to the master but not to the song from the publisher or the other way around. If you control both you can make all your own deals.
I know that seems unrealistic right now, especially with a major label, which is why I don’t think we’d ever sign with them. I would definitely talk to a smaller indie though, who would be willing to try a new form of contract rather than the standard garbage that most labels use today.

  65. Hi All,
I’m Bill Wilson and for many years I ran a little indie called Blackout Records (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackout_Records) and have had quite a few jobs in the music biz ranging from RED distribution in 1991 to Senior Director of Mobile Sales at Atlantic Records. I am currently Director of Digital Strategy & Business Development at NARM (National Association of Recording Merchandisers.) I used to write a blog called NoRevolution and worked with Hypebot’s Virgil Dickerson on IndieHQ.com. I believe there’s a video interview with me somewhere on here from NARMConnects 2009.
One of the things I am currently excited about are common XML delivery standards for asset and information delivery between large and small partner entities, such as DDEX. It is my understanding common language and delivery standard can encourage innovation in the music business by truly creating the abiity to transact in a uniform way (like the travel or finance industries do.)
I’m also interested in helping startup companies who see opportunities in music connect with the major digital retailers and labels. This doesn’t mean just commerce partners or social networks- I want to talk with people who have great new ideas in analytics, data vizualization, and research.

  69. Hi my name is Dante Cullari. I’m 21 years old. I am the Founder and President of a website called Musiwithoutlabels.com, and also an online tool that we hope to have in beta by this fall, called Beat-Play. A little bit about ourselves:
As the artist’s tour money dries up, and their fans continue downloading for free, with no money going to the artists at all, a bleak picture seems to be painted for the future of music.
However, what would happen if artists took one last ditch effort to join together all at once, and used their power for greatness. I am talking about supporting a new model for the music industry. One that utilizes the vast artist and fan communities for purposes like
    free cross-promotion,
    distribution,
ad revenues from song previews and profile views, as well as video views,
    streaming concerts and ticket sales,
    video music lessons or battles,
    show bookings,
    feedback,
    merchandise and equipment sales,
    musical-component or “stem” sales,
    and a LOT more.
Now all of a sudden, with a simple change in direction TOWARDS the predominant new trends engulfing the music industry, and not away from them, us independent artists can begin to open up a number of new revenue streams and opportunities for ourselves, while at the same time offering the best possible value to our consumers and fans, who are also hurting right now.
This new model is called Beat-Play. All of this is possible because Beat-Play is a level, risk-free environment for music of all kinds. This means all music is free to post for sale and is never edited or filtered. Beat-Play doesn’t get paid until the artists or producers get paid, so for that reason, the artists and producers are promoted for free! Beat-Play only takes a very reasonable 5.5% of each sale. All sale prices, as well as every other aspect of an artist’s professional and creative musical career is directly decided by the artist themselves.
Eventually, with this system, the best artists will be able to give their music away for free, and still be completely supported by ad revenues that they draw in.
WELCOME TO THE NEW FUTURE OF MUSIC!
To learn more, go here: http://www.beatplay.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23

  71. Hello! My name is Benjamin DeGain. I am a vibraphone/drumset player and songwriter who has been recording my own music for a few years now.
    http://www.bendegain.com
Okay, full disclosure- I kind of despise the ‘business of music’. However, I recognize the value of understanding the business, so I’ve been trying to take my medicine and pay better attention (no offense, Bruce. your blog is pretty tasty medicine). I feel that the focus on marketing ourselves and selling our product seems to castrate the art a little. Also, I find that the sheer number of bands/artists vying for one another’s attention drains a bit of my creative juice. It frequently seems as though the internet is merely a few million bands trying to get one another to check out their music. So many bands/musicians selling their music can seem like trying to sell ice to an eskimo.
I recently recorded an excellent (in my opinion) album with another musician, but we don’t know quite what to do with it. There is a mountain of albums out there, tossing another onto the pile seems a silly commitment to make. The issue is further complicated by the way that people consume music these days. We aren’t interested in selling ‘tracks’ from our album, any more than an sculptor would want to break off a chunk of his work to share with people.
Sorry that this turned into a bit of a rant. It is really cool to read about how others are involved with music and what your experiences are. Please feel free to visit my site and download the album I just made (it is free). My goal is that i continue to have the drive to create music and share with others. The tough part seems to be finding an audience…

  80. Greetings from Montreal. My name is Geoff Lapp. I am a Montreal based jazz pianist. I really like reading your news bulletins. They are very informative.
I play what is referred to as straight-ahead jazz. I have been in the music business for over 25 years. Started off in pop, salsa etc and moved on to jazz.
You can say hi..via Twitter @

  81. Hey all,
My name’s Ian and I do customer/artist relations (in addition to handling our social media, useability testing & the odd splash of UI design) at the New York-based http://amiestreet.com – we cover a pretty interesting intersection in the digital music field as a place both where people can find and buy music distributed to most stores by record labels as well as a place where artists can upload their music directly to the site.
I tweet out of http://twitter.com/AmieStreet where I try to navigate a pretty tight squeeze between broadcasting and interaction – even if some days it’s just a bunch of blog links, there’s always the real me behind it answering questions. And if you’re looking to share more in-depth questions/comment about AS, feedbackatamiestreetdotcom is the best way to reach me.
As for what excites me, call me a lame shill but I can’t brag enough about how awesome it is to work with the crew at AS 🙂 I don’t think I’d have been too credulous if a few years ago I’d been told I’d snag a job working at the exact intersection of music and the web. Two lifelong interests (obsessions?) at once, sort of hard to beat.
    Best,
    Ian

  82. Hola folks,
I’m Joe Edwards, a saxophonist, and producer (at times). Recently released my latest album, The People’s Gathering…available at http://www.JE-music.com. Also on the website is my blog, a collection of photos/videos, all the other stuff millions of other musicians have on their sites. Just trying to break above the fray…Attending college at the University of Maryland, studying Political Science.

  83. Hi, I’m an Icelandic singer/songwriter residing in Canada. I just released my album Running Naked and I’m drinking like a sponge -any information I can get about DIY-ing music on the internet.
I’m an avid listener of the CDbabypodcast, I designed my own website and use Reverbnation widgets to manage my fans and update various sites. I’ve recently been selected for the Microsoft/Reverbnation marketing campaign.
I’m amazed, fascinated and a little overwhelmed by the opportunties on the internet. At the moment I’m networking to meet partners to take my music to the next level, and preparing for the East Coast Music Awards in Canada.
I’m into music, films (being an actor as well) and -yes- dog training and outdoor action.
You can check out my music on http://www.thorkristinson.com
By the way, I found Hypebot through CDbaby and really enjoyed reading about the Pizza/Limwire encounter.
    Keep fighting the good fight!
Allt the best to you all,
    Thor

  84. Hello. My name is Amber. I am sixteen years of age and from the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. I don’t really do much in the music industry yet, but I really would like to get into either management or producing.
At this point all I do is volunteer at a music venue, help bands find shows to play here in the cities, and just promote bands in general.
Basically, if anyone can give me advice for what I should be doing at this point in time to get started in the music business, please contact me:

  85. hi my names mark self. i record local bands in my area and upload them to my website http://www.musicfilmbroth.com
i think the money making side of the music industry is interesting but sadly the rush to monetizing music, although interesting anthropologically, is sort of sickening in a leechy type way. i try and capture musicians as they are and not how the distributors wish to promote them.
i like to just swill around on the tech change waves. id be up for any of you writing articles for my website or some kind of skype jam/collaboration.
im also writing my phd thesis which has definately got something to do with all my field research but cant decide what that is yet. there is too much too choose from, i.e. the lack of honest discourse in the music industry generally, the demolishing networking opportunities if you speak your mind, etc.

  86. Interesting production, friends on myspace.com/patricio4u or myspace.com/patriciointernational ? Nashville Producer/indi lable, publisher, video & TV

  87. Hi folks, glad to meet you all. I’m Didier, from France, managing 2 related businesses so far : a Web agency (focusing nowadays on digital presence, SEO, SEM…) and a Sound & Music design agency, producing (and publishing) for TV, ads, movies, cartoons…
    Check http://www.myspace.com/CybearSonic
Besides my day to day jobs, I blog: 1 main blog (http://www.KoToNTeeJ.com/ it’s in French, but you can translate posts with tools @ the top), 1 that was setup for a WorldMusic festival, that I keep on feeding, and the last one is dedicated to urban music in Canada, where I take care of the WorldBeat side.
As you may notice, I’m a big fan of WorldMusic, and particularly of African music, old or contemporary.
Through these blogs, I could meet quite a few African artists and we’re discussing ways to help them be more visible… I’m in contact with great musicians and groups from Mali, Guinea, Benin, Senegal, Cameroun…
I’ve been thinking for a while at creating a new “kind of music label” that could provide all the necessary digital tools, as well as legal, marketing, technical… means to empower these artists that, for most of them, have been exploited so far by labels, big, medium or small ones. Some of them have been playing music, composing or singing for many years and lack the recognition they really deserve, as they’ve been used as sidemen for years, where they might have evolved as great artists by themselves.
To start with some results I can show, you should check : http://www.myspace.com/djelimoussadiawara or http://www.djelimoussadiawara.com as well as some artists on FaceBook : Idy Oulo, Mo DJ… If you like their music, please, do become fans… and spread the word 😉
I have more to say(more projects on their way), but will stop here for now…
BTW, I’ll be @ Womex in October ’09, in Dakar for the FesMan festival in December and hope in a festival near you next year with some of these artists… 😉
    Sincerely
    DJM

  92. Hi. I’m Tristan Clopet. My band and I have just finished a 20 day, 12 city tour and in reviewing our Cambridge, MA show, Miss Media asked an concert goer why she thought we were the best band. The fan replied “Because they were playing for us, not at us.”
For those of us in a band isn’t that what keeps us coming back whether there are 200 people in the audience or 20?
    Have a good one everybody,
    Tristan

  93. Hey all!
My names is Dalit (Dah-leet… I know, complicated) and I’m a recent college grad out in San Diego. I’ve spent the last 4 years of college interning at record labels, management agencies and publishing companies. I was working my ass off at these places to secure a career after graduation… thank you economy for screwing my over on that one!
So, I’ve decided to secure my career in a different way… I just started me own music management company, Music H3ad Management and have begun managing one band here in San Diego. I’m moving up to L.A. next month and am looking for one or two other bands to work with.
I would love any advice (I’m a newbie), or suggestions, or even just new friends in the industry!! I’m always on AIM, so chat me up anytime… daltr12

  97. A little late to see this post, but… Hi, I’m Eric, and I’m co-owner of Grataware, an iPhone development studio. We’ve just finished up an iPhone application for an artist that has been featured on hypebot quite a bit lately, just waiting on Apple to approve the darn thing…
As a musician myself, I’m really excited about the way that new technology and social media is allowing artists all sorts of opportunities to be independent and successful.
    Check us out at http://www.grataware.com/

  98. hey all –
I’m Jim, and i’ve worked at a long list of major record labels. I got into “new media” very early on, holding my first VP of New Media job at a label way back in 1995. I saw all the changes happen, met with all the companies that changed the business and got a front row seat to everything falling apart. It was impossible to predict how quickly the business would disassemble itself, and now I think it’s very interesting to surmise how the record industry will recreate itself. The worse it gets, the better it will be, because desperation inspires creativity.
