The New Music Industry’s Week In Review
I'm headed to LA for the New Music Seminar on Tuesday. Tickets will be available at the door and I hope to see you there. Please grab me in the halls for an intro.
Much of the action in the music industry this week took place in Cannes, France at the MIDEM international music conference. Hypebot was there:
- Attendance was down 13%, but many new features were a hit with attendees.
- Spotify shared some serious growth stats.
- A major global music consumption survey was released.
- Topspin announced major partnerships and a UK office.
- Music DNA showcased a rival to the mp3. Plus PIAS, RightsFlow and Seymour Stein all made major announcements.
- Interviewed: Amanda Palmer, MySpace CEO VanNatta & Fall Out Boy Pete Wentz
- Digital distributor IODA added partners in classical music. China and digital marketing.
- 3 MIDEM rumors: No Spotify for the U.S.?, a Zune Phone and MOG expansion.
Other industry news from last week:
- Hope For Haiti benefit release became the first digital only album to hit #1 in the U.S.
- A first look at Apple's new iPad and what it doesn't mean for the music industry …yet.
- A New Radio Ad Kills Lady Gaga
- Kyle Bylin interviews Jeff Gomez – the author of Print Is Dead: Part 1 & 2
- Content deliver provider MediaNet saw downloads soar to 200 million in December.
- The frontman for indie rockers Blink-182 says he has a recipe to change the music industry.
- Universal is expanding its direct sales effort via a deal with Netbisuit.
- Quincy Jones, Bill Withers & John Mayer will headline ASCAP's 5th Expo.
- Artist analytics tool Band Metrics underwent a major makeover.
Midem is a not as important now…just like the winter music conference which is useless… artist should just target there fans.. if your fans are into dirty south hip hop beats, then post your music and info on those forums.. be very targeted.. get the fans and demand and the deals will come looking for you..
