image from bside-images.s3.amazonaws.com Snag Films is an innovative site that offers 1000+ documentaries available for free streaming and RIP: A Remix Manifesto has just been added to an extensive collection of music related films.

In RIP, filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers.

The film’s central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride.

Watch RIP and let us know, which side of the ideas war are you on?

  1. Correct Bas. Useless. I like Negativland very much. They are cool and highly creative. I respect their work and consider myself a fan. However, if someone took some of my work and then proceeded to ride on it and indeed (and here’s the catch) make money off it, where does that leave me? I’m in trouble financially at the moment (along with the rest of the planet) and need an influx of cash to support my sorry little label ass. Do you employ double standards and say screw the big companies and go gentle with the small indies? I really don’t know. All I know is that all art is founded on the shoulders of giants and it is essential and imperative to always name your sources. Credit where it’s due. I like the creative commons license however and it makes good sense to me. Micro payments would be nice though.
