Playdio + Spotify = Legal Full Songs For Podcasts

image from www.playdio.com Podcasting music has usually meant either ignoring the law or only featuring 30 second samples. But Playdio (Playlist Radio), which launches today in the UK, uses Spotify to deliver full licensed tracks in podcasts. Talks are ongoing with other streaming platforms; and developer and digital distributor Kudos Records hopes to ultimately make the platform independent.

Playdio is an example of the huge potential for streaming music services to enable music discovery. Podcasts are made up of  a Spotify playlist that combines spoken ‘tracks’ – recorded by the presenters – and the selected tracks the producer wishes to play in their show.

Users access a Playdio show by clicking on a link, which opens the
playlist within Spotify.  Shows can be cpread via Spotify's social
features to Facebook and Twitter. Spotify Premium users can cache shows
to listen to offline.

The first presenters lined up include Phill Jupitus and Phil Wilding, whose Perfect Ten podcast has racked up over a hundred thousand subscribers – and that’s despite being unable play a single track. Further shows are being lined up by BBC presenters Peter Curran and Mark Webster.

According to Danny Ryan, Managing Director, Kudos Records “We are always keen to work with service providers to find new and interesting ways to reach the consumer.  Adding value to legal services is the key way our industry can successfully compete with file sharing and torrents.”
