Killola: How To Create Merch That Keeps On Giving

image from www.reybee.comGarage-pop rockers Killola, joining forces with Aderra, a digital distributor of live concert recordings, have created USB Dogtags – that not only serve as a unique merch item to sell to their fans, but also provide the group with a another way to instantly connect with them.  Fans who purchase a receive not only the band’s new album, but also their two previous ones

In addition, when fans plug the USB drive into their computer, they also receive exclusive updates from the band including new songs, remixes, live recordings, music videos and photos.  The dogtag idea puts a physical spin into a MusicDNA like experience, allowing Killola to keep providing fans different reasons to buy the dogtag, while still finding new ways to connect with them along the way.

The group will also be broadcasting a live performance on July 22nd that will be accessible only to fans with the USB, adding even more value to the 40$ item.

  1. It’s an idea that sounds great, and one I’ve toyed with myself, but really this is just DRM in disguise which will ultimately be only marginally harder to pirate than any other digital goods.
All it takes is for one enterprising cracker to spend a little time on it and the cat is out of the bag. Next thing you know you have a lot more downloads of your exclusive content than dogtags sold and then you’re back to square one.
