Chris Anderson: “The Web Is Dead.”

Ever one to envelope web memes, Wired editor-in-chief Chris Anderson is at it again. This time around though, he's not writing about The Long Tail, Free, or saying that "Atoms Are The New Bits." Rather, he's declaring that the web is dead. Basically, Anderson makes the arguement that mobile device revolution has caused many people to move from the computer screen and the browser to accessing things powered by the internet, but not actually visiting the web itself.

image from www.thinkers50.com "The Internet is the real revolution, as important as electricity; what we do with it is still evolving. As it moved from your desktop to your pocket, the nature of the Net changed. The delirious chaos of the open Web was an adolescent phase subsidized by industrial giants groping their way in a new world. Now they’re doing what industrialists do best—finding choke points. And by the looks of it, we’re loving it." - Chris Anderson (Read the rest.)

  1. Chris’s assertion will likely come to pass eventually – which, I believe, bodes ill for any closed system (“walled garden,” etc. – like Prodigy, AOL, Apple . . .). But I have to say I’m losing my enthusiasm for this kind of bold emptiness. It’s like saying that we’ll find the cure for cancer one day, or that the average lifespan will eventually be 125 years. If the digital age has established anything, it’s established that immediacy is an essential ingredient to the value of information! Even though he’s speaking in the present tense, I think I’ll wait until Everything Is Free before I stop using “www” completely.

  2. I love how wealthy white people always write like the entire world was just like them. Anderson is a reliable source of empty headlines that fall apart upon any serious examination…but “serious examination” is not his gig in the first place.

Can’t keep up with it all … going back to e-mail after I tweet about it and post it on Facebook.

  4. Chris Anderson is just seeking attention. The web is never dead but it is evolving. Accessing websites using mobile devices is what we call the web. This is called the Internet. The Internet is device-compatible, whether it is a mobile device or a desktop computer or a laptop.
Google is a search engine. When they cease to exist and when users stop seeking for information and connections online, then the Web is dead.
Let me tell Anderson the truth. The web is only just beginning. The web is device-agnostic.

  5. hahahaha. I was thinking the exact same thing. I hate when people make lofty, meaningless statements like that just because they can and know it will garner attention. He doesnt realize that him and his tech-savvy cronies are a very very small portion of the world’s population. The overwhelming majority of the world’s population is probably NOT yet accessing the internet primarily from mobile devices.
