Sign of the Times: Sony Closes Major CD-Manufacturing Plant in New Jersey

image from www.fastdisc.com After 50 years in operation, Sony is closing a major CD-manufacturing plant in New Jersey.

The killer: the shift to digital music downloads and a soft economy. Surprise. Once the Sony DADC plant in Pitman ceases manufacturing operations, about 300 workers will lose their jobs. Sorry guys.

In the early days, the Sony DADC plant produced vinyl music albums for Columbia Records. The label opened the Pitman Plant in May of 1961.

Then Sony acquired it in 1987 when it bought Columbia Records.

At present the Pitman plant pressed CDs for multiple artists, but in late March, its doors will close. Sony did so in an attempt to cut costs and stay competitive.

Wow. That’s especially impressive since CDs weren’t sold commercially ’til 1982! They must’ve stockpiled copies of Dark Side of the Moon for the first 20 years 😛

  3. I believe drivetime is a corrupt business. in 2007 I bought a 2005 kia rio from drivetime. It was my first car and I knew little about buying cars. I am the first person in my family to ever have a license or own a car. Drivetime charged me over $23, 000 for a used kia when a new one is only 16, 000. On top of that, when I fell behind on my payments the called and offered me a payment plan in which they’d push the payment i was behind on back to the tail end of my contract pending I make a minimum payment on my debt. Its around this time that my mother dies due to heart problems. Somehow I managed sell everything I could to get enough money to pay drivetime what I owed them and tae care of my mother’s arrangements. But, drivetime then told me that I was no longer eligible for the deferment and I remain behind to this day. My phone ring several time a day and I dont even want tot talk to those people because they lied to me about what theyd do while I used money that could have went to a memorial service for my mom on their lies.
Drivetime should go to hell. I deeply believe that these people have con’d me better than anyone in my entire life. I have paid them well over 20, 000 for a used kia and they still hound me every hour on the hour know damn well I have paid for the value of the car several times over. I fully agree with this cause and believe drivetime should be sued for corrupt business practices.

  4. It is particularly interesting that this finding rubs just about everyone the wrong way. For evolutionists, this stretches their OOL [origin of life] fairy tales even beyond their own liberal limits. You need the warm little pond, or deep sea vents, lightning, etc. OOL taking place on a meteorite is simply too far out. As Shostak discussed in the story, it forces them actually to take seriously Crick’s notion that OOL is so unlikely it must have come from the cosmos. But how did it get onto these meteorites?

  5. CD manufacturing companies continue to require at least 1000 points to place an order, or just deal with long-term contracts and global, that people need this kind of service options.
