World to Grammy’s: Who the Hell Is Arcade Fire?

image from www.indybay.org Since Eminem or Lady Gaga didn't win Album of the Year and Arcade Fire did, the world seems to be quite confused. The masses are bitter and angry. They plea, "Who the hell is Arcade Fire? Apparently, to them, nothing more than a lowly indie act that somehow bribed the Grammy's staff. It's as if the world is in shambles since Lady Antebellum and Katy Perry didn't win either. There's even an entire Tumblr blog devoted to figuring out exactly who this band of the year is. It looks like indie is still indie. Take a look:

  1. We don’t need the opinion of stupid people who like Gaga and only know about big, manufacturated pop stars.

  2. That’s hilarious! Thanks for posting this.
It’s a good reminder that no matter how famous people are, only a tiny, tiny few are known by most people.

  3. What can be done that people know about more artists than just those big, manufactured pop stars? The labels seemingly don’t care since they go on shrinking their artist rosters. Since the indie world is eating the market share the labels left behind, it is no surprise that they also win more awards.

  4. The Arcade Fire win at the Grammy’s was more of a statement from The Recording Academy simply stating, “We don’t give a fuck about pop music. Only Jazz, Alternative, Rock and Country. If you wanna win a Grammy, play an instrument, read music and don’t be in the genres of pop/urban/or R&B. Otherwise, you have no musical significance to us.” Which is absurd.
However, I applaud Arcade Fire and their win because that album is DOPE.
But seriously, the Grammy’s are a reflection of the music industry. Old folks are crippling it with their lack of new energy, innovation or willingness to deal with change. Oh, and it’s rigged and rapper racist. Fin.

  5. Uhhhh if they didn’t care anything about pop music, why are there 7 award categories dedicated to it? This year especially shows that the Grammys aren’t just a popularity contest. This may have been one of the most ignorant comments I’ve ever seen.

  6. This news just seems weird to me. I remember when Arcade Fire broke big back in 2008 (or was it before that?). I don’t care about the size of their label. They are about as “indie” as Coldplay as far as I’m concerned.

  7. As a voting member of the Grammys this has been a long time coming. I grew up hating the Grammy’s. To me the Grammy’s seemed to give awards based solely on sales Unlike the Oscars which gives awards to quality and not box office. I became a member because sometimes the only way to affect change is from the inside and I have been encouraging indie artists to become voting members ever since. Little by little, more and more indie artists are becoming Grammy members and voting. I knew it was only a matter of time before we might start seeing things like this. Besides Arcade Fire winning album of the year, there was the OTHER REALLY BIG UPSET. A musician of great talent like Esperanza Spalding won best new artist over Justin Bieber and Drake. To be honest, I never thought this would happen, but it did.
I am really proud of my fellow voting members for making this happen. It is going to take a while for the general public to realize that sales don’t always equal quality when it comes to music.

  8. They might make some of the most beautiful depressing music, its a great move for the Grammy to go to a deserving band. I just wish the Grammy’s taste get better in the rap department.
