Grooveshark Is Not Alone: Google Drops More Music Search & Download Apps

image from t3.gstatic.com After Grooveshark's very public battle over Google's decision to drop their Android app, Eliot Van Buskirk of Evolver.fm did a survey of music search and download apps and found that many had gone missing.  No one is talking about why Google decided to drop these apps now, but the internet giant is applying the boot at the very same time it is in tough negotiations with the major record labels to launch a cloud music service. Here's a partial list of the music apps dropped:

  • MP3 Music Box
  • Music Junk
  • Music Online Lite
  • GTunes Music
  • MP3 Music Search and Download
  • Music Wizard
  • Music Downloader Pro
  • Music Box Classic
  • Mp3 Music Searcher
  • Top Female Aritist Downloader
  • Free MP3 Downloader & Player

Do you know more music apps that have been dropped?

  1. The reason for this is obvious. Google is about to launch its own music service and has been doing the dance with the major labels and publishers. It could take the Amazon approach and hobble the functionality of its service in order to avoid having to negotiate new licenses for certain aspects of its intended functionality or it can get the major players to play nice. In order to cajole them along it will play up its role as a buffer to Apple and show it is a music business team player by killing off services such as Grooveshark etc. that are not licensed. Pretty transparent.

  2. In fact the reason is even more obvious than previously stated in the comment above, the fact is the apps listed above are not services at all just a search form to allow you to download music illegally, simple as. In an industry where illegal downloads are such a problem shouldn’t we be pleased that google are pulling these from the market.
