How Did We All Miss This? The New Grammy Categories Drop Gender

image from www.google.com Lost on in the media coverage of the Grammys' controversial category slashing was their decision to also drop separate categories for male and female performances in the pop, r&b and country categories. For the first time, every category on the next Grammy ballot will be open to both genders. But judging from the lack of public outcry, no one is quite sure if genderless Grammys is progress, reverse gender discrimination or just an excuse to have shorter awards ceremonies.

Most top award shows including The Oscars, Emmys, Tonys, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Country Music Awards do have separate categories for men and women, points out, Paul Green on the And The Winner Is… awards blog.  The Grammys once had separate male and female awards in rock and rap, but did away with them in 2004, saying that that there was an ongoing shortage of female entries. Certainly the same case can;t be made for the newly cut pop, r&b and country genres.

  1. could be a good thing – just judged on sales and skills;unless it just ends up being boys winning all the time like in the history books..

  2. I think its a good thing! Females in the pop and r&b categories are dominating now anyway! So in my opinion its a good change!
