Believe It Or Not, Facebook U.S Numbers Are Dropping

image from www.google.com (UPDATED) Facebook lost 6 million users in the U.S. last month, according to a tracking report by Inside Facebook, falling from 155.2 million to 149.4 million. That's the first time U.S. numbers have dropped in more than a year.  Facebook also dropped 1.52 million users in Canada falling 8% to 16.6 million and 100,000 each in the U.K., Norway, and Russia.

Overall Facebook is still up 1.7%  because of growth in countries like Mexico and Brazil. It's too early to tell, according to Inside Facebook, if the trend will hold.

  1. Why is this surprising? Facebook is entering the Myspace phase, which means cumbersome, freezes up, cluttered, and simply people get bored of it.

  2. I agree completely. I think Facebook had to work hard and constantly change to get to the top, but once it got there (like myspace) just tapered off to a slow decline, unaware until it is to late.

  3. 6 million drop out of 600 million users? Is a 1% change on this scale significant? Probably not …
It’s really best to talk to a mathematician/statistician who’ll be able to explain the significance of these changes. Maybe facebook has reached saturation point – that is, the growth has finished and now they’ve reached a plateau … so there are going to be month-to-month variations.
Don’t forget that the weather in the northern hemisphere is warming up and people are probably … outside?

  4. Whoa, the listing kinda irks me. Never thought South America and Asia could be that aggressive. Nevertheless having drop offs is a natural thing eh. People tend to get fascinated by it and drops interest sometimes. We love facebook and i don’t think its closing in future, i guess. wowaccountforsale

  5. After the recent negative publicity involving Facebooks Facial Recognition Software, Facebook spokepersons told the press that they hadn’t received any complaints. Well if losing over 6 million users last month from the United States alone isn’t enough proof of how dissatisfied people are with Facebook, then I don’t know what to say?!

  6. Any chance Facebook just did a sweep of its old, inactive users? a 4% drop in US users just seems so high to just be a random occurrence…
or maybe it’s a mix between market saturation and the fact that summer is starting and many people have more activities outside of facebook?

  7. These Facebook use declines are probably much greater.
Has anyone ever tried to delete their Facebook account?
    It’s almost impossible.

  8. Apart from the privacy issues, Facebook seems to keep changing all the time, in weird little half-publicized ways that you have to keep track of … it’s annoying, and adds to the general time-suck.
Now it seems updates are ‘personalized’ so that not everyone sees what you post … correct me if I’m wrong … but it leaves me wondering who’s going to see what, which just adds to the general pointlessness vibe.
It’s quite good for random spontaneous chats and messages … but something else could be used for that.
A friend of mine calls it ‘Myface’, which just about sums it up for me.

  9. I don’t think slowdown of growth is cause for concern with an IPO coming. I would base Facebook’s value on the advertising income they can generate now, given all they know about their current users.

  10. It’s completely impossible, it will be backed up somewhere no matter what. I still can’t wrap my head around a 100 Billion dollar IPO of a company that doesn’t do anything but provide a convenient platform for communication and interaction. Do people think Facebook is the end of the tunnel? That no new innovative products and ideas are coming down the pipeline? Either way I’m staying as far away from that stock as possible.
