VOTE: Is Spotify A Good Deal For Artists?

image from www.google.com Over the last few week’s, three indie labels have left Spotify and a number of Hypebot readers have expressed their misgivings over the streaming music service’s payments to labels and artists. Of particular concern is how much money will trickle down to the d.i.y. and indie community.  Spotify responded, but many readers are still unsatisfied. So, to see what the silent majority of Hypebot readers really think of Spotify – not as a service,  but how it helps or hurts artists, we created a simple poll “Is Spotify A Good Deal For Artists?“. 1. This is not a black and white issue. It’s a good deal if you are an unknown artist with little to no fanbase yet. It’s not such a good deal if you are a well-known artist. It also depends on your business model. If you are earning all your money from digital sales and you don’t tour, I would avoid spotify. But if you make most of your money from merch sales and touring (or something else that doesn’t fall into the “digital” category), then spotify is the best thing going. You actually get money back for having someone else promote you.

  2. lemonade from lemons, just with out the sugar. I can’t help but think that until other streaming sites step up the competition for royalty compensation rates, this is as good as its going to get for anyone. Ultimately, do you want to make SOME money, or do you want to make NO money?
The streaming service is an incredible way for artists to engage fans. “Hey! Use this free service and play the shit out of our music with it so we get paid!” Its not easy, but it is simple.

  3. Except that Spotify (like iTunes) adds a level of credibility. It says to the fan that you are an actual artist and not a guy who decided to write one song and throw it up on YouTube. Also, the sound quality (if you care about such things) is far better on Spotify.

  4. “Hey! Use this free service and play the shit out of our music with it so the big 4 get paid!”
    There, I fixed your comment.
