What To Expect From Today’s Facebook Music Announcement

UPDimage from www.google.comATED – "Read. Watch. Listen." is the motto of today's F8 conference, where Facebook’s goal is to become "the social layer that supports, powers and connects every single piece of the web, no matter who or what it is or where it lives" to quote Mashable's Ben Parr. That social web includes music and at today's f8 conference, the world’s most popular social network appears ready to take a giant leap toward accomplishing that goal. Here's what to expect from Facebook's music launch:

  • Spotify, Rdio, MOG, Pandora and probably also Rhapsody, Myxr Soundcloud, Deezer (in France), and VEVO users will be able to listen and publish activity on Facebook pages, much like as adding friends or "liking" websites.
  • How it will work: "When a user clicks on an update telling them that, say, their friend is listening to a song on Spotify for example), Facebook will open up a Spotify page and give the user the ability to sign on via a single click, using their Facebook identity. But they’ll have to use Spotify’s player to play, pause and manipulate the service in any way." (MediaMemo)
  • According to a tweet from the company’s creative director Ji Lee yesterday, group lisetening is part of the release.
  • Lots of layout changes. Mashable has a great overview.

The net result?  More time spent on Facebook listening to music which means more music discovery and (hopefully) purchase.
