image from www.google.com Yesterday's announcements may have disappointed both Apple fanboys and Wall Street, but it did contain a few tidbits for the music industry including cheaper beefed version of Nano and iPod Touch players and more details on the iCloud (Oct 11 launch) and iTunes Match (late this month).  During the presentation, the company also shared some remarkable iTunes and Apple stats that serve as reminders of just how important the company is to music. THE STATS:

  • 300 million iPods sold since launch
  • 45 million iPods sold so far this year representing a 70% market share
  • iTunes has sold 16 billion song downloads to date
  • iTunes sold 1 billion downloads in just the last four months (based on the company's 15 billion song download figure in June)
  • iTunes launched with 200,000 songs and now 20 million. That's 100 times as many and 5 million more than Spotify
