How Music Travels: Map Documents The Evolution Of Dance Music

Thomson-logoThomson, a UK-based travel company, recently made a smart marketing move by posting an infographic on its blog titled "How Music Travels – The Evolution of Western Dance Music". Drawing from multiple sources, it's meant less to be a definitive statement than it is to be a conversation starter. It's also received plenty of media coverage and looks like a big success as an attention getter.

Thomson's specialty appears to be package holidays, one area where such a service can still compete with the disruptive forces of travel sites for booking flights, hotels and autos. Their blog typically focuses on travel experiences connected to their offerings.

However, blogger Osman Kahn recently posted an infographic, "How Music Travels – The Evolution of Western Dance Music", that's a fun approach to music scholarship and connects to music as something that travels along with us.

Drawing on Wikipedia and such books as "Bass Culture", "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" and the "All Music Guide to Electronica", the infographic has definitely stirred up debate and media coverage from the comments section of the Thomson blog to I Can Haz Cheezburger's showbiz outpost ROFLrazzi.

Actually, following where music travels sounds like a great idea for a series of package tours!

  1. Wow. Seldom have I seen so much misinformation and superficiality arranged and displayed so gracefully.
