  1. Looks like the websites where the songwriter put up his ringtones for free do not provide an exit scenario for “free”. Their goal is not to earn money for the songwriter but for themselves by using the songwriter’s free work as a bait for visitors. Having your downloads distributed there sounds like paying the rent for a way overpriced apartment. And since no songwriter (and maybe not even the download site) really knows the price he could sensibly pay to the download site for their services, it’s near impossible to estimate which of the competing websites / schemes brings in the highest sustainable revenue for the songwriter without trying out different options first, at the risk of saturating your own market with free product. The technical providers win again, like the shovel makers in the day of the gold rush.
