Fans Become The Light Show With Dan Deacon’s Live Concert Mobile App

Screen Shot 2012-09-25 at 10.50.25 AM“For
the first time, having your phone out at a concert is not a jerk move.” That’s
what the description of Dan Deacon’s mobile app says in the iTunes store, and
with proper reasoning. Deacon, a well-seasoned electronic musician from
Baltimore, has been known for his highly engaging live performances that oftentimes
include him interacting heavily with audience members, and in turn, having them
interact with each another (performing in the crowd, choreographing uniform
dance moves, holding dance contests in the middle of the floor, etc). Deacon
has taken his fan interactivity to the digital front by providing them with an app
that allows them to host their own collective light show.

Deacon’s
free iPhone and Android app turns a fan’s smartphone into light and sound
sources based upon each user’s location without using WiFi or data. Fans
attending a Dan Deacon concert are encouraged to download the app before the
show, and when they arrive, all the phones running the app are controlled using
sonic prompts. Deacon then effectively synchronizes the crowd’s phones to display
whatever colors and timing effects he feels. Also rather interesting, the app allows a fan's smartphone to emit sound and be used as an extra instrument for Deacon himself to play.

This
is a novel idea considering that good concert etiquette is usually to keep your phone
away during the show out of respect for the artists on stage, as well as your
fellow audience members. However, Deacon’s approach with this app creates a
unique and personal experience for each person, while including everyone in the
collective concert experience.

The Dan Deacon concert app is available for iPhone and Android devices.
