EDM News: SFX Buys Beatport, Avicii Releases Crowdsourced “X You”, DJ Marketing Bible

Beatport-logoThe week's off to an interesting start in the Magical Kingdom of EDM. Empire builder SFX Entertainment is buying leading EDM marketing and download site Beatport while Avicii released his crowdsourced track "X You." In addition, new EDM biz blog EDM Hero recently featured the free DJ Marketing Bible from DJ Lounge.

SFX Entertainment Buys Beatport

Ben Sisario, writing for The NY Times, reports that SFX Entertainment is buying Beatport at a little over $50 million.

The deal is part of SFX Entertainment's ongoing billion dollar buying spree that began with the acquisition of Disco Productions.

Beatport boss Matthew Adeel "said that being part of SFX could help the company extend its business into live events, and also into countries where the dance genre is exploding, like India and Brazil."

It's hard to argue with such a deal for Beatport but it will be interesting to see grassroots response to the news.

Avicii – X You

Last month Avicii announced he would be crowdsourcing a "hit" with the help of Ericcson and now it's here.

And, yes, "X You" does have that upbeat yet somewhat insipid quality one would expect from a hit. In fact, I can see lots of licensing potential here though I'm guessing Ericcson's got first dibs.

DJ Marketing Bible

The freely downloadable DJ Marketing Bible (direct link) has information useful for all DJs, not just those focused on electronic dance music. But I found it through a new EDM business blog called EDM Hero.

According to EDM Hero's Facebook Page, the man behind the curtain is Dan Adler aka SGX.
