Songwriting 101: Why Originality Matters

MultiplesDo you play original songs or only play cover songs? The answer to this question can reveal your true intent, ambitions, and talent. When first starting out, musicians cover songs, but eventually build up their skills and start getting creative. On Music Think Tank, Mark Doyon encourages musicians to be original.   

Originality — the quality of being new, fresh, innovative, or novel — is the difference between a piano player and a player piano. It is the distinction between a painting on canvas and a print from the museum gift shop.”

  1. Making a cover your own “original” song is also possible with a bit of imagination. Some covers can be much better than the original.

  2. Interesting how labels and music biz people are always looking for “the next ___” (fill in the blank). So I guess if you’re trying to succeed commercially, originality isn’t always what they’re looking for!
