Metal Guitarist Illustrates Anti-Piracy By Purchasing His Own CD [VIDEO]

image from bravewords-public.s3.amazonaws.com(UPDATED) It's easy to be philosophical about piracy until it effects you. As much as we publish about the "power of free" and the "new paradigm",  I admit to the annoyance that I feel when I learn someone has reposted an entire Hypebot article without asking, and often without attribution. Such was the case for guitarist Guy Marchais of death-metal band Suffocation last week after the band released Pinnacle of Bedlam.

To make his own case against piracy and to encourage fans to go buy the new CD.DVD, Machais used his smartphone to film himself buying his own release at the local FYE store.  He struck a nerve, and the simple video has been watched 52,000+ times in the last week on YouTube.

“I didn’t think for a second that this was going to get so many views,” he wrote on Twitter.

Watch it and tell us what you think.

  1. There is no better way to explain the impact on artists then to hear it from them. BTW FYE is an awesome store and for those that like Dawn Richard, they have the bouns version of #Goldenheart

  2. I think this is a good video and illustrates some nice points even though I may have some different views. Another way fans can also support bands that they download is by using Flattr, every bit counts.

  3. $19 for a cd? That’s why, genius. Boring video. They sound like Mrtallica to me. Hopefully this dude is the drummer.

  4. I think it would have been better just to simply make a video explaining that they’re independent and ask for support along those grounds. I think you have to approach selling music now from the standpoint that no one owes you anything. Don’t fuss at the fans.

  5. these “Musicians” SUFFOCATION are downright brutal! To make folk aware of their intensity, Look at their up coming tour dates…Hly Krapp!! Brutal… Their determination and effort deserves adulation and
    R E S P E C T….Of all musicians….EVERYWHERE….. Fn BRUTAL!
