Women’s Audio Mission: 10 Years Of Supporting Women In Music Production [INFOGRAPHIC]

Wam-logoSan Francisco's Women's Audio Mission is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Founded by Terri Winston in 2003, Women's Audio Mission offers a welcoming space for girls and women where they can develop professional skills in music and audio production. If you feel such work is important, please consider supporting Women's Audio Mission.

Despite the fact that rising rents from the first tech boom in the 90s drove out hundreds if not thousands of artists and activists from San Francisco and shut down many community spaces due to rising rent, a process being heightened by the second tech boom, artists and activists still find a way to create space in a city known for creativity and political commitment.

With 10 years under its belt, Women's Audio Mission offers an important example of how arts and activism often merge in the Bay Area.

For the Record: Women’s Audio Mission at 10 Years

According to their announcement:

"Led by veteran recording engineer, musician and founder Terri Winston, Women’s Audio Mission began at City College of San Francisco where, as Director of the college’s Recording Arts program, Winston increased women’s enrollment from 12% to 43% – the highest percentage of any recording arts institution in the United States."

"Recognizing a need that surpassed the classroom, in 2003 Winston started WAM to increase women’s participation in pro audio by building up their credits and discographies and to introduce music technology to girls who traditionally do not have access to such a curriculum at a young age."

Current programs include:

Girls on the Mic

Women-run Recording Studio

Gender Balanced, Online Audio Industry Training Materials

In-studio Classes for Women
