MTV Artists Debuts First Mobile App, Tell Us What You Think

Mtv-artists-appsToday MTV Artists launches a new app to leverage all that info and content they've been gathering on their site. If it takes off that will certainly be enticement for more artist involvement. I don't find the app that compelling but I'm not good with apps so maybe you'll have a different response. However I'm also wondering why I don't hear more about MTV Artists outside of their own publicity. Hypebot readers, any thoughts on the state of MTV Artists? Musicians, in particular, are you finding the site of use?

Awkward-good-wayBy indie rapper Kosha Dillz (@koshadillz).

So many people are always talking about the biggest thing they ever did in their life. How many kids do you know who were child superstar athletes and got burnt out by the time college came? I know tons of those kids. What about people who were in shape when they were younger and are now 50 pounds overweight…do you know any of those people? I do.

The 7 Essential Elements of Your Digital Press Kit

Press_XSmallWhen reviewing websites for Bandzoogle, I advise artists to think about the different kinds of people that will be visiting their site. These can be your current fans, and potential new fans, but also media/bloggers, bookers and other industry people.

For that latter group, they’re likely looking for different information than your fans are, and you have to be sure to make it easy for them to find it.

Ryan Holiday On Traditional Marketing, Growth Hacking and Music [Updated]

Ryan-holiday-picInspired, in part by Ryan Holiday's new book "Growth Hacker Marketing" , I recently introduced some ideas about growth hacker marketing for musicians. I then spoke with Holiday about how his ideas apply to musicians including Alex Day with whom he has worked. Growth Hacker Marketing focuses quite a bit on a binary of new and old approaches to marketing. Once you get the idea of growth hacking, you'll realize that it's more a perspective than a technique, one that greatly expands the concept of marketing.

Musicians In Sweden May Sue Warner Music and Universal Over Spotify Revenue

Per-herreySwedish Musicians' Union lawyer Per Herrey told a Swedish radio station late last week that a number of Swedish artists are considering suing Warner Music and Universal over their split of Spotify revenue. Many of these musicians are working under pre-digital agreements that give them a cut based on earlier days and they feel they should get more. It's less an attack on Spotify than an issue between artists and major labels.

Twitter #Music Will Live Despite Planned Demise Of Mobile App

Twitter-music-logoA bit more clarity came to the discussion of Twitter #Music on Friday with a piece by Alex Pham in Billboard. Her sources say that the app's going but Twitter #Music will become part of the main Twitter platform. In fact, it will become one of a number of topic verticals that will allow Twitter to sell more targeted advertising. This certainly makes a lot of sense though it was interesting to see Twitter leveraging its data to power an offsite web and mobile app.
