Music Publishing News Weekly Roundup 4.11.14 – UK Stats, Dianne Warren, Kurt Cobain & More
(UPDATED) PRS For Music has released its overall numbers for 2013. The U.K. Performing Rights Organization increased their annual revenue by collecting £596 million in 2013 to distribute to its collective estimated 100,000 members. Public performance royalties were the highest for the PRO with a total of £162.3 million. The majority of this was from U.K. television and radio broadcasts. A new law was also passed this week within the U.K. Government to ensure that U.K. collection societies comply with a regulated “Codes of Practice” when negotiating performance licenses with businesses.

Diane Warren received International Music Industry Person of the Year Award at MusExpo on Tuesday, April 8th at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Warren is best known for writing hit songs such as Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me”, Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” and Toni Braxton’s “Un – break My Heart”. Universal Music Publishing North America President Evan Lamberg moderated a Q&A session that Warren gave after the award show here.
SESAC has acquired the catalogue of Kurt Cobain for performance licensing in America. The deal that covers Nirvana hits like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Come As You Are” was acquired by the U.S. Performing Rights Organization earlier this week. This deal comes along with a resurgence of the catalog due to the 20 year anniversary of Kurt Cobains death. The catalog was previously represented by BMI.
