8Tracks Shares New iOS App, Impressive User Growth and… Profitability

8tracks logo(UPDATED) 8Tracks today launched a new iPS app that should continue to propel impressive user growth for the free online music service.  With 8 million active monthly users, 8Tracks ranks as the 5th most popular online music service in the U.S. among 19-24 years olds, according to March ComScore mobile and PC data.

8tracks1That number falls to 6th among 18-34 years olds and 8th overall. But those are still impressive stats in a category dominated by deep pocketed players like Spotify, Pandora and iHeartRadio. 8Tracks has received just $1.5 million in funding since launching in 2008, and says they've been profitable since 2012. By comparison, Spotify has received $538 million in backing.

New iOS App

8Tracks is home to thousands of user generated playlists. In addition to genres, users can now find them by how they are feeling (e.g. happy, sad, love, mellow).  Other new features include:

  • 8tracks2Timeline on the home screen “drops the needle” where you last left off; you can swipe RIGHT to reveal your playlist history or LEFT to see upcoming playlists

  • Shortcuts, a personalized list of tag combinations and other playlist sets you tune into most frequently, lives below the Timeline

  • Explore allows you to browse using capsule-style tags and animation while readily distinguishing genres from activities or other themes

  • Sidebar gives you ready access to Collections you’ve created on the website, as well as your Profile, Feed, Liked playlists and Recommendations

  • Tumblr and WhatsApp have been added to the usual suspects (Facebook, Twitter, text, and email)

8tracks has recently begun to sell advertising directly. Accordingly, iOS 3.0 will feature new native ad units.

The company also says they will be launching a new Android app shortly.
