Sub Pop Launches Drip.fm-Powered Digital Music Subscription Service

Sub_Pop_logoFor much of the music industry selling digital downloads seems like an uphill battle and streaming music companies are struggling to get consumers to subscribe for a little under $10 a month to all you can eat megacatalogs. In contrast, Drip.fm is powering digital music subscription services for which fans will pay that much to get downloads of every digital release from a single indie label. Slowly adding labels since 2011, Drip.fm now includes Sub Pop on its roster.

Drip.fm seems to be doing well and I hope that's the case. I think they're one of the more important indie-oriented music tech companies currently in the game.

image from musicgoat.comThey launched in 2011 and since then have been developing a digital music subscription service that early on included Drip.fm cofounder's own Ghostly International label as well as Stones Throw Records among others. The full list of labels also includes Kill Rock Stars, OWSLA (Skrillex), Ninja Tune, Fania Records, Domino Records, Fool's Gold Records, Mad Decent and, now, Sub Pop.

This week Sub Pop announced their Drip.fm-powered subscription service.

At $10 a month Sub Pop's "Drip" includes:

  • Choose any 3 releases from the catalog to unlock instantly
  • Ongoing access to all new releases in the Sub Pop drip
  • Eligible for giveaways and member-only perks
  • Full fledged member of the community

Of course not all labels have the kind of strong identity that would attract subscribers but for those that do indie subscription services seem well worth exploring.
