Don't hold a contest! It may be cheap - but come on, how many times have we bemoaned people not valuing music, expecting bands to play for free etc. Have some empathy and transfer that that to designers. Why should they design a cover/poster/whatever for you for free? Even if you don't end up using it, they've still put in time and effort to create something especially for you, and they shouldn't have to expect to do it for free.

Us creatives got to stick together!
