So many musicians and music marketers are using Instagram these days that you may already be using Hyperlapse, Instagram's new video app. Hyperlapse allows you to create time lapse videos with the support of image stabilization while you're on the move and then speed up the resulting footage. Thus Hyper[time]lapse. It's a great quick tool for anything that takes time including band setup, audience action, rehearsals, performances or other activities that could be related and quickly transformed into Instagram action.
Jack Conte now has a strong track record of success as half of Pomplamoose, as a musician/videomaker and as founder of Patreon. Conte recently spoke with TechCrunch for a back to school series but, except for the passing use of "student musicians," the interview is not about student musicians at all. It's for musicians getting started who want to create a career on their own terms whatever path they ultimately take.
Is it me, or is this not a great reason to cancel a show? Some of my most memorable concert moments were when an artist overcame technical adversity - feedback, bad weather, even no power - and continued the show. Apparently these bands see things differently. Here's the story:
The headliners for the Rockstar Uproar Festival were unable to play at an August 23rd show at the Mount Airy Casino, citing production issues. In a post on their Facebook page, Godsmack, one of the headliners for the festival, wrote:
The rise of digital music has cultivated an "instant rockstar" mentality amongst aspiring musicians. Everything can be digitally edited, overlayed, autotuned, re-mastered, etc. so the emphasis on strong musicianship has the potential to get a little lost in the pursuit of quick results. Video games such as Guitar Hero, Singstar, Rock Band, and several others could be easily mistaken for music lessons or instrumental tutorials, but can a game with a severely skewed representation actually teach us more about being musicians? Probably not... unless you're Rocksmith.
Former President of CD Baby, Brian Felsen, Is Named New President of AdRev, a service that helps artists and labels monetize views on YouTube. AdRev's primary strategy is to place premium advertisements on videos to generate more money than the standard advertising formats. The company claims to have over 6 million copyrights, including music libraries of publishing companies and major recording artists. Felsen believes YouTube has an advantage over other streaming competitors because it has created a high demand for all types of video.
Filmmaker and photographer Danny Clinch has been named as Creative Director at Tourgigs, a company that offers a range of services to produce, film, market and distribute concert films on streams or recorded media. Clinch has been recognized for his music photography and has been presented in numerous galleries and featured in major publications globally. Clinch is also a three-time Grammy Award-nominated director for helming full-length documentaries, concert films, and music videos by artists such as Bruce Springsteen, John Mayer, Pearl Jam, Tom Waits, Willie Nelson, Ben Harper, John Legend, Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews Band and The Avett Brothers.
Back in June the Tango messaging app/platform launched Tango Channels to offer special content partners an organic way to reach Tango users. Initially such major music brands as Spotify, 8tracks and Vevo were included. Tango's Channels are off to a strong start and more big music names are coming on board. You can now find channels for Rhapsody and SoundCloud among a growing group of music channels.
Remember when Google Glass was a thing? At least to us media people? As Google Glass has gone from hard to get to available if you can afford it, it's mostly dropped out of music-related news. But yesterday Pandora launched a Google Glass app aka "Glassware" bringing the incredibly popular web radio service to Glass users.

Twitter's making it easier to keep up with the reach of your tweets on Twitter by opening their Tweet activity dashboard to all users. Previously available for advertisers and whoever Twitter deemed special enough to verify, Twitter's analytics may tell you some things you didn't know but leave you wanting more.

Ticket search engine SeatGeek today announced it has raised a $35 million Series B round led by Accel Partners. Causeway Media Partners, a sports-focused investment fund led by Boston Celtics CEO Wyc Grousbeck. Also participating in the round were rapper NAS, Super Bowl MVPs Peyton and Eli Manning, and Melo7 Tech Partners.
Watch out Spotify, Deezer, Rhaspody and the rest. A new player is flush with cash and ready to expand. Taiwan based mobile music streaming service KKbox has raised $104 million to fuel its international expansion. Singapore fund GIC funded the new round. Other major shareholders include Japanese telco KDDI and HTC.
T-Mobile has doubled the number of music streaming services in its Music Freedom plan. AccuRadio, Black Planet, Grooveshark, Radio Paradise, Rdio and Songza join iHeartRadio, iTunesRadio, Pandora, Rhapsody, Samsung Milk, Slacker and Spotify in the mobile carriers unlimited data music streaming package. Google Play Music will be added in the coming months.
Rockbot today announced that the company has closed an additional round of financing. The round is led by Detroit Venture Partners and includes top global music group Universal, Susa Ventures, XG Ventures, Susa Ventures, and an AngelList syndicate led by Sundeep Ahuja. Previous investors include Google Ventures and Accelerator Ventures.
Vine's an interesting phenomenon. The 6 second limit on video length seems to inspire creative acts that may not translate into longer formats but it does create a proxy for measuring first glance marketability. While the early wave of musicians getting the most attention on Vine were already well known elsewhere, a growing number appear to be building real followings on Vine. But whether or not Vine will ultimately be more than a place where major labels discover or stage discoveries remains to be seen.
Brian Felsen, former President of CD Baby and its associated publishing service Book Baby, is now officially President of AdRev. Described as the "world’s largest YouTube music administration service," AdRev has "grown from humble beginnings as a Content ID admin and digital media licensing service to a multi-channel network generating over THREE BILLION monthly views." Though Felsen led many digital initiatives at CD Baby, he's now firmly in the digital age at AdRev.
Many independent musicians dream of playing their favorite late night TV shows, landing interviews in iconic magazines, and receiving top-score record reviews on the most notorious music websites. Sure, these are great press aspirations, but obsessing over and chasing after big-name media rather than adopting a comprehensive plan across various types of outlets can actually undermine your career goals. For the majority of early-stage music artists, regional and niche publications are equally, if not more, essential than the majors when it comes to positioning oneself for long term sustainability in an increasingly competitive market.
Today Eventbrite released a research report on music festivals in the U.S. Working with Mashwork, they analyzed online conversation to identify the "25 Most Buzzed About Music Festivals" and what the fans were talking about at the time. Many of the social media conversations occur before and after the events and a surprising number involve people not at the events. Clearly a lot to consider if you're interested in the relationship between social media and real world events as well as the growing music festival scene.
Partience is a virtue... and it is absolutley necessary when efficiently releasing your newest music. As eager as we all know you are for people to finally hear the music you've been working on for days, months, or even years, you must be sure to take the time to get the most mileage with your material. A successful album release requires planning - and a lot of it. If you're releasing albums as soon as they hit your front porch now would be a good time to do your homework.
One year ago Spotify launched Connect, which allows Premium users to play tracks through their speakers controlled wirelessly from the Spotify mobile apps. Today, the music streamer announced the addition of Bose, Panasonic and Gramofon to the platform. Also added is multi room playback allowing multiple users to listen to the same or different tunes across multiple speakers.
