NFL Weighs Pay To Play For Super Bowl Half Time

image from www.celebrityaccess.comPay to play – owners demanding that artist pay to play thier venue – is coming to Super Bowl. The National Football league is reportedly asking artists to pay to be selected to perform during the half-time show at Super Bowl XLIX. In a story first reported by the Wall Street Journal, the NFL has asked Coldplay, Rihanna and Katy Perry if they'd be willing to offer a percentage of their future tour earnings or “some other type of financial contribution” in exchange for the half-time slot.

image from upload.wikimedia.orgWhile the Journal article did not include a specific percentage or dollar amount, they did report did say that the NFL's proposal received, perhaps unsurprisingly, a chilly reception from artist reps.

In past Super Bowls, artists were not paid for their half time performance, but the league covered travel expenses and production costs. Artists benefited from the exposure — Bruno Mars' performance with The Red Hot Chili Peppers was watched by a record 115.3 million viewers, more than who saw the championship game itself. This exposure can be valuable, in terms of record sales and touring. The Journal noted that last year's Super Bowl half time show was “more than double the size of the audience for the Academy Awards this year, more than triple the audience for this year’s Grammy Awards and more than 11 times the size of MTV’s most recent Video Music Awards.” – via Celebrity Access

  1. Well I can not believe the NFL is asking for us, Music Artist, to pay them to perform considering the amount of money they make. In my opinion were doing them a favor. Music groups such as the ones mentioned to perform and past performers do not need the exposure. I say to all the musician tell the NFL to fuk off and not do anymore half time shows if this is the stance they are going to take.
