The 1975 Kept New Album Off Spotify For Just 12 Days And That It Helped It Debut At #1
Despite an aggressive campaign by Spotify to discourage it, more and more artists and labels are windowing – the practice of not making them available to streaming music services until weeks or months after release. The latest to use the tactic successfully are young pop rockers The 1975.
It's not just superstars like Adele and Taylor Swift who are not immediately making their new releases available on Spotify and other streaming music services.
UK pop rockers The 1975 kept their sophomore album "I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It” on Dirty Hit/Interscope off the streaming music services when it was released on February 26th.
The result?
The 1975 debuted at #1 on the BuzzAngle Music‘s Album Project chart for the week of Friday, February 26 to Thursday, March 3, 2016 selling over 103,000 album project units. Billboard reported similar results. The album also debuted at #1 in Britain, Canada Australia and New Zealand.
But this Friday March 11th, "I Like It When You Sleep" will debut on Spotify. A fact that the music streamer acknowledged on the band's artist page:
"The 1975's new album "I Like It When You Sleep" well be available here as of 11th March. Come back then to listen."
Expect more artists to experiment with windowing in the coming months.
