Adele Signs $130 Million Sony Deal

Adelle$130 million dollars. That's the total of the record deal that Sony has reportedly signed with Adele. You can't blame her for taking the cash, but is it a smart move for Sony at a time when artists like Chance The Rapper are proving that they don't need a record label to have a hit?

Adele has reportedly signed with Sony for a reported $130 Million. Neither side has confirmed the details, but a source at Sony told the UK's Sun, “We’ve secured Adele, who’s without doubt the biggest music star in a generation. This is massive.”

At age 19, Adele had signed with indie XL Recordings; but it was widely know that that deal was up this year.

Adele was the top selling artists in the world last year. This $130 million deal will double the singer's fortune, according to The Guardian.  A source also told the paper that the deal had been arranged through Sony’s US label, Columbia and “gives Sony the rights to release her future music exclusively around the world”.

  1. It’s good to keep in mind that major labels are really good at delivering high-quality physical distribution. One of the reasons for the success of “25” was the distributor’s (i.e., Sony’s) powerful execution of high-volume co-op deals in the physical retail market. Thus for an artist like Adele with a big physical market, a major label remains an important partner to have. Having said that, the extent to which the success of “25” on its own can extend the life of physical music formats remains to be seen.

  2. I’m sure I’m not the only reader of this blog who knows that this is probably 100% bullshit. You can probably leave a zero from the end of that number (so it’s more like $13M). This is just a PR hype, coming from the label so they can “sell” everyone the idea that Adele is a huge star. They even stated this “who’s without doubt the biggest music star in a generation. This is massive”. I’s a fuckin hype.
Don’t buy every bullshit you read in the press.
