During his intro to “Bored in the USA”, J. Tillman aka Father John Misty told the crowd that he had been offered a quarter of a million dollars to cover Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” for an ad for restaurant chain Chipotle.
At this weekend's Newport Folk Festival and just before he sang “Bored in the USA”, J. Tillman, better know as Father John Misty, told the audience that he had been offered a quarter of a million dollars to cover the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” for an ad for fast food chain Chipotle.
“Yep, that’s my life,” Father John told the crowd. “I was like, ‘Cool, so then I can just buy like two Cadillacs and just crash them together. Later he tweeted:
Point of the Chipote story was a discussion on whether folk music is good for anything anymore other than just the selling of things— FARMER JAH MISERY (@fatherjohnmisty) July 26, 2016
Chipotle responded with a special Father John Misty themed menu.
The same song was covered for a Chipotle ad by Alabama shakes frontwoman, Brittany Howard and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James. Watch:
