Apple Music “Up Next” Trademark Filings Reveal Plans For Emerging Artists Program

Apple filed two trademark applications recently "Apple Music UP NEXT."  Earlier this year, Apple Music introduced the feature to promote select up and coming artists. Daniel Caeser, Billie Ellish, Sigrid and 6LACK are among the artists who have benefited from "UP NEXT."

Apple trademark application # 87646704 for Apple Music UP NEXT includes this description:

"Entertainment services in the nature of development, creation, production, and distribution of musical artist video documentary series; entertainment services, namely providing music, interviews, live music performances, and videos featuring musical artists; entertainment services, namely, a multimedia program series featuring musical artists distributed via various platforms across multiple forms of transmission media."

Apple trademark application # 87645544 for Apple Music UP NEXT includes:

"Streaming and broadcasting of performances, documentaries, music, and interviews featuring musical artists; streaming and broadcasting of audio and visual content featuring musical artists; transmission and delivery of audio and visual content featuring musical artists."

Spotify's new RISE emerging artist program also hopes to harness the cultural influence of its 140 million users to launch new artists through a combination of multi-tiered marketing and editorial programming. It launched with four diverse artists: transgender pop-sensation Kim Petras, pop/rock artist Lauv; country singer Russell Dickerson and hip hop artist Trippie Redd and will add 4 new artists every few months, supporting a total of 16 emerging artists per year.
