"Strike when the iron is hot! If you jump right off stage with a clipboard or tablet in hand, you will leave a lasting impression on your audience.

Walk the crowd and politely, yet insistently ask for their email address. It really helps to have a handful of stickers with you. You get their email address, they get a free sticker. It’s a win-win."

  1. What about GDPR compliance?
That should be covered in this article, since failure to comply can open up a musician to very expensive fines!
So for example just collecting emails on a sign-up list at a concert and adding them to an e-mail list may not be GDPR-compliant. Is it? List members are supposed to opt in (via some stringent requirements) , and list owners should keep careful records of such opt ins. I’m not sure a paper sign-up list at a concert venue qualifies, nor do most of the online forms (unless they are specifically designed to be GDPR compliant).

  2. GDPR is definitely a topic that needs to be considered when using emails to market to fans. There’s a lot of interpretation on the subject, but one of the things that seemed to be at the forefront is intent. Are they signing up for a free download or some sort of lead magnet and THEN will automatically start receiving weekly newsletters? Probably not compliant. But if you’ve explicitly gotten permission (and can easily prove it) to market to them, it sounds like you’ll be ok. Of course, this isn’t legal advice. Please reference and research for yourself! Mostly all email platforms have now built in GDPR-compliant templates, so that’s a great place to start, but don’t forget your privacy policy and terms & conditions too!
