On October 11th, 2005, the Atlanta-based Rattlesby Records will release Believer, the latest effort from current Allman Bros. bassist Oteil Burbridge and his band, The Peacemakers. Believer is a collection of eleven original songs blending jazz, jam, funk and gospel, showcasing the awe-inspiring talent from the twice-Grammy-nominated Burbridge.
Burbridge first emerged in 1990 as a founding member of the Aquarium Rescue Unit. Although
best known for his current role in the Allman Bros., Burbridge has also played in Vida Blue with Phish’s Paige McConnell and The Funky Meters’ Russell Batiste, and has contributed to recordings by Gregg Allman, Victor Wooten, Trey Anstasio and John Fishman of Phish, and T. Lavitz. In 2001, he also briefly replaced the late Allen Woody in Gov’t Mule.
In addition to Burbridge, the Peacemakers include Chris Fryar (Gravy, Charles Neville, Victor Wooten) on drums, Paul Henson (Aquarium Rescue Unit) on vocals, Mark Kimbrell on guitars and Matt Slocum on keyboards.
Believer is the third effort from the band, yet the first to be released nationally. The first album, Love Of A Lifetime, was self-released in 1998. Their second effort, The Family Secret, was released in 2002 on Artist House. The critically acclaimed bassist has been featured numerous times on the cover of Bass Player Magazine, in which he was voted “Best New Bassist in 1995.”
Because The Peacemakers’ live shows are so explosive, the trick for producers Burbridge, Chris Tyler and Penn Robinson was to capture a live-in-the-studio sound. “I wanted to make a live album….this was as close as we could get to the live stage sound in the studio,” says Burbridge. “I am also really proud of the fact that I could invest a lot of spirituality in the lyrics while maintaining jazzy grooves people could latch on to. It’s my mission to show you how funky God can be.”
Of Believer, Barney Kilpatrick, President of Rattlesby Records, states, “I am so pleased that Oteil saw fit to have us release his new album. I am doubly pleased that it turned out so well from a musical standpoint. I look forward to helping Oteil and the Peacemakers reach a larger audience."
In between touring with the Allman Bros., Oteil and The Peacemakers will be on the road as much as possible this fall, beginning in Boulder, Colorado on September 1st. Advance copies of Believer are available now at www.oteilburbridge.com and will be available at all shows.
