The deal is for new subscribers only, but it is no secret that it is not that hard to game that that requirement. 

**Clearly this is another loss leader for Spotify;**

 as it most likely is involuntarily for artists and labels. If Spotify is not running adds to pay artists and they are only charging 33.3 cents per month, where is the money to pay creators?
