By [Carla Jean Whitley](http://blog.sonicbids.com/author/carla-jean-whitley?ref=hypebot.com) on [Sonicbids Blog](http://blog.sonicbids.com/4-blog-post-ideas-to-hold-your-fans-attention?ref=hypebot.com)

The [musician's life](http://blog.sonicbids.com/5-things-that-smart-musicians-do-every-day?ref=hypebot.com) isn't always glamorous. But the average fan doesn't have an understanding of what that life is really like – and they're often eager to find out. **Sharing your story by [blogging](http://blog.sonicbids.com/start-getting-press-top-5-niche-hip-hop-blogs-for-rising-hip-hop-artists?ref=hypebot.com) can help build a lasting [fan relationship](http://blog.sonicbids.com/the-shows-not-over-how-to-engage-connect-and-follow-up?ref=hypebot.com).** None of this has to be complex; a few good sentences or a [photo](http://blog.sonicbids.com/what-your-band-photo-says-about-you?ref=hypebot.com) that offers insight into who you are and what you're doing will keep your fans interested whether or not you're [releasing new material](http://blog.sonicbids.com/how-to-successfully-release-your-next-single?ref=hypebot.com).

If you don't already have a [blog](http://blog.sonicbids.com/start-getting-press-top-5-niche-blogs-for-rising-rock-n-roll-bands?ref=hypebot.com), start by signing up on a free platform such as [WordPress](http://wordpress.com/?ref=hypebot.com), which offers a great deal of customization; [Blogger](http://blogger.com/?ref=hypebot.com), which is incredibly user-friendly; or [Tumblr](http://tumblr.com/?ref=hypebot.com), which is especially good for pictures. [There are plenty of reasons to choose one over another](http://stylecaster.com/best-free-blog-sites/?ref=hypebot.com), **but the most important part is that you start posting sooner rather than later.** Here are four ways to keep your audience engaged through blogging.

## 1\. Live-blog your tour

You know that [touring](http://blog.sonicbids.com/9-must-have-apps-for-touring-musicians?ref=hypebot.com) typically means a *lot* of time in a [crowded van](http://blog.sonicbids.com/5-van-etiquette-tips-to-ensure-sure-your-bandmates-wont-hate-you-on-tour?ref=hypebot.com), some [couch surfing](http://blog.sonicbids.com/couch-crashing-etiquette?ref=hypebot.com), and catching a glimpse of a town if you're lucky. E**ven so, take your listeners behind the scenes to give them a taste of life [on the road](http://blog.sonicbids.com/how-to-tour-as-a-diy-solo-artist?ref=hypebot.com).** That could be as simple as [photos](http://blog.sonicbids.com/3-things-all-musicians-need-to-understand-about-concert-photography?ref=hypebot.com) of how packed the van is or audio snippets of [band](http://blog.sonicbids.com/4-tips-to-make-your-bands-instagram-more-engaging?ref=hypebot.com) chatter. But take it a step further: are you a coffee aficionado? Introduce [your fans](http://blog.sonicbids.com/how-to-leverage-your-favorite-bands-fans-create-your-own-aftershow?ref=hypebot.com) to the great coffee shop you discover in each town.[Touring](http://blog.sonicbids.com/5-signs-youre-not-ready-to-go-on-tour?ref=hypebot.com) with family and your rest stops are planned to allow your child time outside? Share your favorite rest areas and parks along the way.

For example: [Josh Ritter](http://www.joshritter.com/?ref=hypebot.com) gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at his 2011 tour through his blog [Book of ](http://thebookofjubilations.tumblr.com/post/15633852091/a-day-off-in-missoula?ref=hypebot.com)[Jubilations.](http://thebookofjubilations.tumblr.com/post/15633852091/a-day-off-in-missoula?ref=hypebot.com)

[![2836828090_67d4900ab3_o](http://a4.typepad.com/6a016766638dee970b01b8d09a28cc970c-150wi "2836828090_67d4900ab3_o")](http://a4.typepad.com/6a016766638dee970b01b8d09a28cc970c-popup?ref=hypebot.com)

2\. Discuss your songwriting process

The [creative process](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creativity?ref=hypebot.com) produces an obvious wealth of material – and you don't have to save it all for the [record](http://blog.sonicbids.com/ask-a-publicist-whats-a-campaign-timeline?ref=hypebot.com). Some say no one wants to see how sausage is made, but music is another animal. Listeners are often curious about sources of [inspiration](http://blog.sonicbids.com/7-ways-to-get-out-of-a-songwriting-rut?ref=hypebot.com), the nuts and bolts of [writing](http://blog.sonicbids.com/how-to-write-songs-that-get-stuck-in-peoples-heads?ref=hypebot.com) and rewriting, and even how you choose a [producer](http://blog.sonicbids.com/4-things-you-need-to-know-before-heading-to-the-studio-without-a-producer?ref=hypebot.com). **Share the process as it develops – perhaps even the voice notes you hum or sing when inspiration strikes.** Your listeners will be left feeling like they're part of the process.

For example: [Country](http://blog.sonicbids.com/5-folk-and-alt-country-labels-you-probably-didnt-realize-accept-demos?ref=hypebot.com) music star [Sara Evans](http://www.saraevans.com/?ref=hypebot.com) posts webisodes to her website, offering fans a look at life and music, including [one about the songwriting process](http://saraevans.com/video/simply-sara-pop-webisode-songwriting-edition/?ref=hypebot.com).

## 3\. Tease a new release

The easiest time to blog and [promote your work](http://blog.sonicbids.com/7-red-flags-that-a-music-promotion-service-isnt-legit?ref=hypebot.com) may be when you've got an album [set to release](http://blog.sonicbids.com/the-4-most-game-changing-album-releases-of-the-last-decade?ref=hypebot.com). **Be sure to update your listeners whenever you've got a new [interview](http://blog.sonicbids.com/ask-a-music-journalist-how-to-give-interview-like-pro?ref=hypebot.com) or [media appearance](http://blog.sonicbids.com/5-ways-to-maintain-relationships-with-the-press-after-your-first-review?ref=hypebot.com).** Tease album [pre-orders](http://blog.sonicbids.com/5-ways-to-influence-fans-to-buy-physical-music?ref=hypebot.com) by sharing a free song (or perhaps even an alternate version). Got special packages available? Be sure to let your fans know.

For example: Tristan Prettyman is a longtime blogger, and has [recently shared lyrics and streams of songs](http://icecreamisbetterwithafork.tumblr.com/post/101034814476/track-1-who-we-are-i-would-grant-all-your?ref=hypebot.com) as she prepared for the release of "Back to Home."

## 4\. Get personal

On the flip side of the equation, days outside of the studio and off the road may seem like dead time. Think again. [Your fans](http://blog.sonicbids.com/6-tips-to-stay-relevant-in-your-facebook-fans-news-feeds?ref=hypebot.com) are still interested in who you are and what makes [your music](http://blog.sonicbids.com/4-rules-for-presenting-your-songs-to-music-supervisors?ref=hypebot.com) so special. If you’re working as a mechanic in order to pay your bills, write about it. Your day-to-day experiences surely affect your [writing](http://blog.sonicbids.com/13-tips-to-make-co-writing-fun-and-productive?ref=hypebot.com), interests, and aesthetics. **Invite your fans behind the music, and you'll hold them that much closer.**

For example: Rather than traditional blogging, Over the Rhine [integrates an Instagram photo stream on their website](http://overtherhine.com/news/?ref=hypebot.com). The photos frequently offer listeners a look at the Ohio farm the band calls home.
