MTV Invests In Music Videos, Starts New Show

image from www.mediabistro.com Through their new project Supervideo, MTV is financing and producing music videos. The first feature to be created is "Pow Pow" by LCD Soundsystem. With this show, they're attempting to bring back the genre of videos that made the brand famous. Don't expect MTV to get back into the music business just yet though.

Reality shows and teen pranks are their foray now. Kashy Kahedi, the publisher of Mean Magazine, is behind this effort. He pitched the idea himself to David Gale, MTV’s executive VP of New Media. Both appear to be pining for simpler times, but with YouTube and VEVO, there's less of a need for MTV or Fuse, no matter how much we miss them. CMT is one of the few networks left banking on viewers watching videos on TV. They've done a great job at enticing interest in the video, showing the viewer what's currently playing throughout it, and hooking them into the next video to be played. It seems like simple things, but in the past, that's how it worked. Credits aired at the beginging and end of the video. The viewer didn't know what was going to play next until the current video ended.

Since, they've changed all of that and are winning in the space that MTV left years ago. But, if the ratings crash, who knows how long Supervideo will last.

  1. Rick…you need to step up your cable and get Verizon Fios. MTV has a channel called MTV Jams that hooks you in all day even if you don’t like the music on it. My kids and their friends don’t watch anything else.

  2. mtv and cmt are run by the same people. not sure what you mean by “not in the music business”. if that’s true, they never have been in the music business. if you want to be pedantic, they are a marketing company that sells advertising.

  3. I’m not sure this really makes any sense? MTV *owns* CMJ, as in, a unit of. Fire your researcher! Or, hire one 😉

  4. MTV does amTV late at night and in the early morning….It’s all music videos. And yes, if you get Verizon you’ll get an additional 5 or 6 MTV channels that are strictly videos 24/7.

  5. When bitching about MTV you should also give them credit as the network that spawned sister channels MTV2, MTV Tr3s, mtvU, MTV HITS, MTV Jams, VH1, VH1 Classic, Vh1 Soul, CMT and LOGO (under MTV Networks Music & LOGO Group) – there’s plenty of music across those channels.

  6. But why should music not be on the flagship MTV channel and put all the reality/social crap on a MTV Social channel or something similar.
There are no music channels on basic cable at all and you have to purchase the expensive packages to get those channels.
