Could 2009 Be Music’s Year Of The Garage?
John C Abell at Epicenter resurrected the Rules Of The Garage a kind of 12 commandments of tech written by Bill Hewlett and David Packard that grounded the founding of Hewlett-Packard in their garage back in 1939 – to inspire tech startups battered by the economic downturn.
In reading them, I realized that the rules could just as easily be a call to arms for the music industry in all its forms whether a music tech startup, a label struggling to redefine itself or musicians in their parent’s garage. Together, perhaps we could make 2009 the music industry’s Year Of The Garage:

2 is absolutely critical for the success of both tech startups and band startups; if you can’t do #2 than don’t even bother, find something else to do
Appreciate the call to arms… I particularly like #6 “The customer defines a job well done.”
For those of us who provide services to artists, the model(s) are evolving in a million different directions, and it’s crucial to be clear, informative and transparent in our strategies, expectations and goals.
For example, some of the back and forth discussion concerning ROI for social media could better be served by talking about the value in building community and not using the ROI term which is fairly specific in meaning.
Ultimately, the client/artist defines a job well done in his/her craft AND in his/her marketing/sales/online initiatives.
Just make sure you are clearly talking about the same things.
