INTERNS: Summer 2008
Application Deadline: Rolling
Length of Position: Flexible, preferred May through August

Future_of_music
The Future of Music Coalition
is a national non-profit education, research and advocacy organization that identifies, examines, interprets and translates the challenging issues at the intersection of music, law, technology and policy. FMC achieves this through continuous interaction with its primary constituency – musicians – and in collaboration with other creator/citizen groups.

Location:This position would be working with FMC staff who are based in the Dupont Circle area of Washington, DC.

Time
The hours are flexible, but we would like you to be in the office at least twice per week sometime during 10 am – 6 pm on weekdays.

Core Projects
FMC works toward its mission through three program areas: Research, Education and Policy. We organize public discussion of issues that impact musicians and the public at large, making sure to include a variety of voices in the conversation. We submit testimony, publish articles and speak on panels to make sure the creators’ experience is heard. We generate original research to more completely illuminate the mechanics of the music industry.

In summer 2008, we have a number of projects happening simultaneously. An intern could contribute to all ongoing projects. Some key work includes:

Event Coordination
FMC often holds events and conferences in Washington and elsewhere. An intern could help with logistics and planning for these events.

Rock the Net Campaign

FMC is currently managing an online campaign where bands and artists can demonstrate their support for the principles of network neutrality. The Rock the Net website allows bands and artists to enter shows, which are then plotted on a Google map. The website also helps bands and fans to learn more about the issue, sign petitions, and contact Congress. An intern could help us with campaign promotion through petition-gathering at local concerts, data management, and event organizing.

Website

FMC is in the midst of overhauling its website: www.futureofmusic.org<http://www.futureofmusic.org> . An intern could help with the testing and changeover process. In addition, there will be opportunities to contribute to our blog with written posts or by producing audio or video clips.

General Expectations
FMC is a fast-paced but friendly work environment. Since our employees work from different cities, we rely heavily on email, conference calls and meetings to get our work done. Answering your email promptly, following through on assigned tasks to completion and sticking to deadlines will be essential.

Helpful Qualities and Skills
Excellent reading/writing skills and working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Internet skills are required. Knowing Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop are a major plus. In addition, anyone who has audio or video editing skills, podcasting or webcasting experience would be great.

Compensation
This is an unpaid internship, but opportunities to attend concerts, meetings, and hearings can occur. College credit is optional.

To Apply: Please send letter, resume, software proficiencies, and writing sample similar to the type found on our website to chhaya@futureofmusic.org.
