FCC May Licence More Community FM’s. It Could Save Music Diversity.

Our friends of at DubMC
report that rumors are circulating that for the first time in way too long "the Federal Communications Commission is going to open a new application window for FM broadcast licenses for nonprofit
organizations. The available bandwidth would be geared towards Fcc_11new
local, community-based stations."

"There is grassroots movement to start
to organize consortia of performing arts communities and organizations
to apply for the licenses. Many broadcast spectrums in densely
populated markets are too full for new licenses, but up to two thirds
of zip codes are thought to be eligible for new licenses. Wouldn’t it
be amazing if a local "world music" market teamed with other arts
organizations to create globally-minded local radio station on par with
Berlin’s Radio Multikulti."

This and more will be discussed at an open meeting during the Arts Presenter convention:

When the
popularity of illegal downloads emerged a few years ago, there were articles
about the end of the music industry. Yet music has not only survived, it has
thrived with the emergence of download sharing, free blogs, and social
networking sites, though the financial model is still not clear. "What will the new model be?"  This open discussion brings together world music presenters, agents,
artists, and record labels about how they are using new technologies to reach
their audiences and fans in new ways. Facilitated by Dmitri Vietze/rock paper
scissors publicity: Bloomington, IN.
