- Description: Cory Wong's new tour isn't really about a new album — it's a case study in curating formats, guests, and routing to do an album's job instead.

Here's a trick question: how many tours did [**Cory Wong**](https://www.bandsintown.com/a/2192802-cory-wong?utm%5Fsource=hypebot&came%5Ffrom=900) just announce?

If you said *one*, look again.

In the space of a single press cycle, the [**Vulfpeck**](https://www.bandsintown.com/a/2957241-vulfpeck?utm%5Fsource=hypebot&came%5Ffrom=900) and [**Fearless Flyers**](https://www.bandsintown.com/a/15353060-the-fearless-flyers?utm%5Fsource=hypebot&came%5Ffrom=900) funk guitarist locked in one-off dates in Guangzhou and Hong Kong, a dedicated European run built around a guitar-collective concept, a 10-city US tour with a pop vocalist riding shotgun, and a two-night hometown stand with a completely different guest.

He doesn't really have a new album he's promoting, or a single driving any global [marketing strategy](https://www.hypebot.com/tag/marketing-strategy/). He's stacking [support acts](https://www.hypebot.com/how-to-nail-your-next-supporting-act-set/), stacking formats, and collaging different looking live performance environments... for the hell of it?

It's curious in an age like ours, where things tend to look pretty buttoned up at Wong's level. There's an unruly aspect to a three-tour announcement that's odd-angled, and Wong is odd too, so let's sit with this from a promotional standpoint. Here's what I find so intriguing.

## **This isn't a tour. It's a portfolio.**

December brings "Fretboard Odyssey" through the UK and Europe — Dublin, Nottingham, Leeds, Cardiff, then into Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden — with a rotating cast of **Mark Lettieri, Ariel Posen, Henrik Linder, Louis Cato,** and **Kevin Gastonguay.** Wong has been explicit that this isn't a "shred showcase."

The pitch is more around players with different vocabularies speaking a similar language but with totally different accents, reacting to each other live. This is music-nerdery scaled up to 11\.

But then February and March flip the format entirely: a 10-date US run with **dodie** joining his band as guest vocalist and UK soul-funk act **PREP** opening. Then it closes with two nights at Minneapolis' First Avenue — his actual hometown room — with **Blu DeTiger** instead.

Three formats. Three different audiences. Zero overlap in who's on stage.

## **The collaborators aren't openers. They're the strategy.**

It's worth asking why dodie, PREP, and Blu DeTiger specifically. None of them sound like Cory Wong, which is part of the strategy behind it. A bedroom-pop-adjacent singer-songwriter, a UK soul band, and a bass-forward dance-pop artist each pull a fanbase that doesn't naturally overlap with "funk guitarist who plays with Vulfpeck."

But, as many indie touring acts can attest to this vein of thinking, pairing with them is *not* a [booking](https://www.hypebot.com/tag/booking/) afterthought, it's audience acquisition — borrowing reach from genres he isn't in, rather than trying to out-genre them. And "Fretboard Odyssey" only works at all because of a decade of relationship-building: Lettieri and Posen are, by Wong's own account, close friends built over years of mutual fandom. Louis Cato came out of the Colbert house band. Gastonguay has played alongside Wong since their first day of college.

Essentially, this tour is an act of cashing in goodwill that was being built long before anyone called it a tour. That's a super useful takeaway for anyone reading this who isn't playing arenas: **your collaborator network is a touring asset, whether or not you've ever thought of it that way.**

## **Even the map has a thesis**

Look at where each format lands. The Asia dates are one-offs and a festival slot (WestK Jazzfest in Hong Kong) — a low-risk way to test a market rather than commit to a full run. The ensemble show goes to European clubs and mid-size theaters, a format built for a listening crowd rather than a singalong crowd.

The guest-vocalist format hits North American rooms sized for his existing pop-adjacent pull. And the hometown dates get a bill nobody else on the tour gets. It's four different go-to-market plays, each one matched to what that specific audience in that specific market is actually there for.

## **The real lesson isn't about Cory Wong**

I guess the hopeful thing for those of us that aren't selling out largescale venues across the world is to think that you don't need new music to justify a tour, and especially if the format itself is the hook.

There are really so many ways to market a tour, and this live listener environment today (as expensive and volatile as it is for artists), is strangely a great context to test new models. At Hypebot, we're constantly covering announcements in the festival, booking, and tour management space that feel counter-intuitive or messy. When we zoom out, it's hard to imagine that that isn't a point in and of itself.

Audiences like messy, why do we keep trying to button everything up so neat and tidy?
