First up, a look at the top artists on social media for April 20-May 20.When it comes to social media stardom, it pays to be famous — and it also pays to have been around for a while.The first point isn’t surprising; it stands to reason that well-known musicians also have big fanbases that want to follow them on social platforms. But what’s more interesting is that legacy acts (including artists who are no longer living) put up big numbers in the social space as well. Despite all the talk of social media being a place to break new artists, the data points to the old guard winning the war for followers. This trend does vary by genre. The top ten pop artists on Instagram are all fairly predictable and current ([Selena Gomez](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/066e60aa-2022-17f3-c6da-1e39ca8891e7/overview), [Ariana Grande](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/3749d5f5-0c8c-2695-9389-2679975311f2/overview), [Beyonce](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/6cb4bc22-71a6-9f57-193a-e88aae92b975/overview), etc). Rock, however, seems stuck in the past with [Motorhead](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/d08f2bfb-8e39-c0e3-32f2-da8d33855951/overview), [Metallica](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/e7a06e67-a6b5-11e0-b446-00251188dd67/overview), [Foo Fighters](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/e576d2c3-a6b5-11e0-b446-00251188dd67/overview), and [Lenny Kravitz](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/e21eca79-a6b5-11e0-b446-00251188dd67/overview) all in the top ten. Rap trends along the same lines, with 50 Cent and Eminem near the top. Similarly, Twitter’s top pop stars are contemporary, while rock seems about ready to retire. [Coldplay](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/3679217f-6952-6c0d-0ab9-e02de37e31c3/overview) aside, other top rockers on Twitter include, [Yoko Ono](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/a676ade9-9693-69bc-760e-f0739c05e49e/overview), [Ozzy Osbourne](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/7adb0105-149a-4e7d-a153-43650bb80f8b/overview), and British comedy and music legend Bill Bailey. And Facebook is even more ancient — of the ten most liked rock bands, none rose to fame in the 2010s and only three in the 2000s; the remainder of the list are all right at home on the classic rock station. Rap likewise seems to favor elder statesmen — the top rap artists on Twitter include [Snoop Dogg](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/05879a22-295d-4e80-8075-ed519d60cf51/overview), [Eminem](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/65951b5d-f6f6-898a-0e85-9f2dc8f7e888/overview), and three different accounts related to Diddy/P. Diddy/Puff Daddy. Over on Facebook, [Eminem](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/65951b5d-f6f6-898a-0e85-9f2dc8f7e888/overview), [Jay-Z](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/e4484087-a6b5-11e0-b446-00251188dd67/overview), [Will Smith](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/e6272e96-a075-1ec7-01cd-15d0795b1772/overview), [50 Cent](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/d32a6399-f331-4958-b39c-772dc6812ca2/overview), and [Snoop Dogg](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/05879a22-295d-4e80-8075-ed519d60cf51/overview) all have top like counts. Even the biggest movers (those who gained the most followers over the last month) tend to be older. The biggest gains on Facebook in rock came from artists like [Jimi Hendrix](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/333caa00-4211-ce3d-e60c-d07dd0d954c8/overview) and the [Scorpions](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/e330954e-a6b5-11e0-b446-00251188dd67/overview); on Instagram, [Mick Jagger](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/03c482a4-9460-3af4-c21c-6fd6db075894/overview) and [Aerosmith](http://www.musicgraph.com/?ref=hypebot.com#/artist/e5bda2a8-a6b5-11e0-b446-00251188dd67/overview) saw huge jumps in followers. Here, rap differs, as most of the artists gaining followers are newer and younger.
