[**Bandcamp**](https://www.hypebot.com/tag/bandcamp/) is the best place for an [independent artist](https://www.hypebot.com/tag/indie-artists/) to sell merch to the people who already love the music. [**Printful**](https://www.printful.com/sell-with-printful?ref=hypebot.com) is one of the easiest ways to sell a shirt without a box of unsold shirts in the hallway.

The trouble is that **the two don't talk to each other.** Bandcamp has no Printful integration, so every order has to cross the gap by hand.

A friend of mine, an underground musician, did exactly that for years. Each evening he opened the new Bandcamp [merchandise](https://www.hypebot.com/tag/merch/) orders, copied the buyer, the address and the size into Printful, paid for the order, waited for it to ship, then pasted the tracking number back into Bandcamp. A few minutes per order doesn't sound like much until a new release drops and there are forty of them.

Here is what we learned about doing this well, by hand or not.

### 1\. Know the five steps you are actually doing

Every Bandcamp-to-Printful order goes through the same five steps:

1. **Read the order** in Bandcamp: buyer, address, item, option (size, colour).
2. **Pick the Printful product and variant** that matches the Bandcamp item and option.
3. **Fix the address** so Printful accepts it.
4. **Create the order** in Printful and confirm it (Printful charges you at this point).
5. **Close the loop**: when Printful ships, mark the Bandcamp order shipped and add the tracking number, so Bandcamp emails the buyer.

Writing them down makes it obvious where the mistakes come from. Almost all of them happen in steps 2, 3 and 5.

### 2\. Name your options the same way in both places

The most common mistake is sending the wrong size or colour. On Bandcamp an item option can be called anything: "L", "Large", "Black / L", "Women's fit L". In Printful the same thing is a variant with its own name and ID.

Keep a simple mapping table: one row per Bandcamp item and option, one column with the Printful variant. Use the same naming on both sides wherever you can ("Black / L" in both). When you add a new design, add its rows before the release, not after the first wrong shipment.

### 3\. Watch out for addresses

Bandcamp collects addresses the way buyers type them. Printful's API expects codes: CA, not "California"; NSW, not "New South Wales"; country codes, not country names. Orders with a full state name can be rejected or stall in Printful.

When copying by hand, convert the state and country to codes as you paste. Double-check the countries that need a state or province for shipping, such as the US, Canada and Australia.

### 4\. Combine orders from the same buyer

Fans often buy a record today and a shirt tomorrow, or come back for a second shirt in another colour. If each Bandcamp order becomes its own Printful order, the buyer gets two parcels and you pay two shipping fees.

Before you create a Printful order, look for other open orders to the same buyer and the same address from the last day or two, and put them into one Printful order. A short "combine window" (wait a few hours before sending) saves real money around release days.

### 5\. Use drafts when you are unsure

Printful lets you create an order as a draft and confirm it later. A draft costs nothing and isn't printed. If you are not sure about a variant or an address, send it as a draft, check it in the Printful dashboard, then confirm. It's a cheap way to catch mistakes before they are printed.

### 6\. Don't forget the tracking number

This is the step that gets skipped. If you don't mark the Bandcamp order shipped, the buyer gets no shipping email and no tracking link, and writes to you asking where the shirt is. Copy the tracking number from Printful into Bandcamp the day it ships. It also keeps your Bandcamp order list honest: what's shipped and what isn't.

### 7\. Decide when to automate

For a handful of orders a month, a spreadsheet and twenty quiet minutes a week are fine. The signs that it's time to automate:

- Release days produce more orders than you can copy that evening.
- You have sent the wrong size or colour more than once.
- Buyers write to you asking for tracking.
- Someone other than you (a bandmate, a label partner) needs to handle orders too.

Bandcamp offers a Merch Orders API for exactly this. Each seller requests access from Bandcamp and gets their own keys. Printful has a public API, and every store can create its own token. With both, the five steps above can run by themselves.

### What we built

After a few months of watching my friend copy orders, I wrote him a small tool to do it. He has been running his store through it for nine months now, without copying a single order. That tool became [BandBridge](https://www.google.com/url?q=https://bandbridge.co&source=gmail&ust=1792224056308000&sa=E).

It does the five steps above: it reads new Bandcamp merch orders, matches each item to a Printful variant and asks only when it is not sure, converts state and country names into codes, joins orders from the same buyer into one parcel, sends them to Printful as drafts or confirmed orders, and marks them shipped in Bandcamp with the tracking number. Products and prices in your store are never touched, and you keep paying Printful directly.

We are opening it to a focus group of 20 artists and labels who sell Printful merch on Bandcamp. It's free during the test, in exchange for honest feedback. If you are one of them, you can request access on the site.

And if you'd rather keep doing it by hand, the checklist above still works. My friend used it for years.
