Major Labels

Neilsen And Big Champagne Partner On Combined Radio/P2P Chart

BigchampagneEven as the RIAA and major labels continue to fuss and sue over the illegality of P2P file sharing, Nielsen Entertainment and BigChampagne announced today that they will partner to combine radio airplay monitoring with download data from P2P services. The strategic relationship will deliver a mix of Nielsen’s measurement of terrestrial, satellite and digital radio airplay with BigChampagne’s file-sharing charts in an effort to provide customers with a comprehensive report on music consumption.

Isn’t it amusing that much of the "consumption" being measured is dubbed "illegal"?   Aren’t major labels likely to be the service’s first customers?  Even as the industry fights this impossible fight; they’ll be hyping activity on this new chart.

How long will it be before someone offers an "Indy" service that bulk downloads illegal files to push a track up the charts?
