Is this what it has come to?

Lacking a proper Hip Hop/R&B promo team Epic shunned the indie promo and marketing community and hired competing hip hop label Koch to promote two new releases by Sean Kingston (pictured at the right and currently at #1)and Yung Berg.

Epic calls it smart outsourcing and I’m all for that.  But if I were the acts I’d be making a direct deal with Koch pronto.

In the new music business, if your label is not your marketer; what is it good for?

  1. For one… the signing advance may have been better. That upfront money and marketing budget will always sweeten the pot for a rapper.
They could have signed just to Koch, but Epic’s goal is to turn rappers into pop stars and I’m not sure Koch can do that.Rappers who want to be superstars, sign with majors, but that won’t make em rich.
I hope Sean Kingston does not. get the wrong end of the deal with so many hands taking a cut, and hopefully his publishing is in order. He has a good team with Zach Katz and J.R Rotem, but Epic may take control of his career outside of recorded music and that’s never good.
